But that wasn\u2019t the case with the Department of Theatre, Cinema and Dance production of the John Steinbeck classic \u201cOf Mice and Men\u201d last October.<\/p>\n<p>Out of more than 200 productions considered for the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Region V Festival in January, \u201cOf Mice and Men\u201d was one of only seven productions selected, and it was the only main-stage production at the 1,100-seat Ames Center in Burnsville, Minnesota.<a href=\"http:\/\/lamp1.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Mice-and-Men-Pic-300x300.png\"><img class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1002 alignright\" alt=\"Mice-and-Men-Pic-300x300\" src=\"http:\/\/lamp1.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Mice-and-Men-Pic-300x300-150x150.png\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0Once in Minnesota, adapting the set to the unfamiliar stage of The Ames Center took all day, leaving no \u00a0time for even a brief run-through before the evening performance. In a venue holding more than twice \u00a0as many people as Missouri Western\u2019s Potter Hall Theater, with no microphones to amplify the \u00a0dialogue, one key focus of cast members was simply to make themselves heard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery single person upped their game,\u201d said cast member Steve Catron, senior theatre and cinema \u00a0major of Omaha, Nebraska. \u201cIt was like going from Triple A baseball to the major leagues in one night, \u00a0and nobody missed a swing. It was astounding to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reaction of the crowd was astounding too, Catron said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore the lights went out (after the last scene), you could hear the emotion,\u201d he said. \u201cYou could hear people crying, and the audience was getting to their feet. It was something I don\u2019t think any of us will forget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That audience response validated the hard work of the cast and crew, said Dallas Henry, assistant professor of theatre and video.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe moved an audience, and I think in the end that\u2019s why we\u2019re performers,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s why we do what we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Usually, when a play is done, it\u2019s done: memorized lines are forgotten, scenery and costumes are put away, and cast and crew move on to the next production.
