Celebrating 100 Years

Centennial Capital Campaign
Dear colleagues,

The work you do every day transforms the lives of our students. Our community is a better place because of the impact of our faculty and staff.

As we prepare for our Centennial year, we asked you to share what our theme of Transforming Lives means to you. One of the most inspiring stories comes from Dr. Elizabeth Latosi-Sawin, professor of English.

Hear what transforming lives means to Dr. Latosi-Sawin.

As we prepare for our Centennial year in 2015, the University is also in the preparation stages for our Centennial Capital Campaign. Your participation in this campaign is just another way that you transform the lives of our students. Thank you to those of you who have already made your commitment to this campaign. If you have not yet had the opportunity, you can make your pledge today..

Thank you all for your continued impact on our students, your colleagues, and your community.

Sincerely,

Jerry Pickman
Vice President of University Advancement
and Executive Director of the Missouri Western State University Foundation

*GRIFFON SOFTBALL ENDS ANOTHER GREAT SEASON IN NCAA TOURNAMENT*
Griffon Softball trekked north for their seventh NCAA Tournament Appearance in the past ten seasons this past weekend in Winona, Minnesota. On Friday, the Griffs opened play against fourth seeded Augustana. A tight strike zone led what figured to be a pitchers dual into a run scoring frenzy in falling in heartbreaking fashion 8-7. After gaining a 7-4 lead in the fifth inning following a Kat Steponovich three run home run, Augie fought back with three in the sixth and won the game on a walk-off, two out home run in the seventh. On Saturday, the Griffs won the first elimination game 5-0 over Southern Arkansas as Jackie Bishop pitched a four hit shutout with Tiffany Gillaspy driving in three runs with a home run and a double. The win brought a match-up with host and number one seed Winona State. After falling behind 3-0 early, the Griffons tied the game in the sixth before two Winona home runs in the bottom of the inning gave them back the lead and ultimately brought the season to a close in falling 5-4. The Griffons finished the season 39-18 overall.

*GRIFFON BASEBALL SEASON ENDS IN MIAA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME*
For the second straight season, Griffon Baseball advanced to the championship game of the MIAA Tournament. While last year’s run was no surprise, this year the team overcame adversity and a host of new players to once again play for the conference crown. The Griffs came up a bit short on Saturday in Springfield as they fell to third seeded Emporia State by scores of 3-2 & 6-0. In game one, the Griffons got on the scoreboard first in the top of the fifth inning as Cody Childs' triple drove in two runs. The Hornets scored three unanswered the rest of the way to force a deciding game. In game two, ESU pitching stifled the Griffs at the plate thus ending the season. The Griffons advanced to the title games by defeating Northeastern State on Thursday 12-11 and Central Oklahoma on Friday 5-2. The team finishes 2014 32-20 overall and unlike last season, returns a host of key contributors for next year.

*PARTRIDGE & JORDAN CONTINUE GRIFFON NFL TRADITION*
Dreams came true for two more Griffons over the weekend as quarterback Travis Partridge and tight end Reggie Jordan agreed to rooking free agent deals. Partridge will continue his career with the Minnesota Vikings while Jordan will call north Florida home inking a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. With these signings, Griffon Football now has five current players on NFL rosters.

*PAINT IT GOLD, GO GRIFFS*!
"American Story" performance reprised in Colorado
On May 17, Missouri Western students returned to Colorado to reprise their production of “American Story” as a part of a statewide centennial commemoration of the Ludlow Massacre.
The Ludlow Massacre occurred on April 20, 1914, when the Colorado state militia attacked and burned tent city housing, striking mine workers who had been evicted from their company-owned homes. As many as 25 people died, shocking the nation and eventually transforming industrial worker-company relations.
Congratulations to all of the current performers from Dr. Susan Carter’s Opera Workshop!
