Building your Leadership: Apply to be a Mentor

I’m so happy you’re interested in continuing your Transition Mentor experience! There’s going to be some changes this year, so be sure to read through all of the information below to ensure you’re following the correct application procedures as a returning mentor.  As a returning mentor you get to choose if you want to apply to be a Senior Transition Mentor. Preference is given to those who have held a Transition Mentor role for 2+ years, but all returning mentors can choose to apply. See below for details on both roles and application processes.

As a returning mentor, you have options. Please read through the descriptions below to apply as a returning Transition Mentor or Senior Transition Mentor. Application processes vary by position.

Dates to Know:

  • October 12 – Applications Open

  • October 15th – Resume Workshop (optional)

  • November 1st – Applications due at 11:59 p.m.

  • November 10th – Application extention – due at 4:30 p.m.

  • November 4- 6 – Group Interviews

  • November 10 – 12 – Individual Interviews

  • November 18 – Position Offers Emailed

  • November 23rd – Deadline to accept or decline position

Returning Mentor

Returning mentors are an essential part of running smooth events. As a returning mentor you know the drill, you get to do more than just mentor incoming first-year students, you get to mentor first-year Transition Mentors! By returning, you will amplify your skills, take on more responsibility, and have even more fun. As an added bonus, we’ve made the process a little easier for you. Returning mentors are not required to attend an information session or do an individual interview during the selection process. After selection, returning mentors will only be required to attend four training sessions in the spring.

Before applying, please review the updated job description for a Returning Transition Mentor. Changes have been made to the expectations and application process, which will look different from past years and other roles (such as first-year mentors and Senior Transition Mentors).

In place of mandatory attendance at an Informational Session, all returning mentors will be required to view the Returning Mentor Overview video on Panopto. This brief video will explain the new application process, training expectations, updates to positions and provide an overview of what to expect in the coming year for Transition Mentor roles. This video must be viewed in full by November 1st at 11:59 p.m.

The general application for 2021- 2022 Transition Mentors is closed. We are still accepting applicants for 2021 Griffon Edge Mentors. To apply email Melissa Stallbaumer at mstallbaumer@missouriwestern.edu by February 1st.

Transition Mentor applications are due Sunday, November 1st at 11:59 p.m. The application will require an up-to-date resume (hint, if you don’t include Transition Mentor on your resume I can tell it’s an old resume— don’t do that!) The Career Center is offering a resume workshop on Thursday, October 15th at 2:00 p.m. You can also take a look at some of the awesome online resources, or stop into the Career Center to have them review your resume and suggest changes!

It takes a huge amount of teamwork to execute an effective event. Group interviews are an opportunity to showcase how applicants work in a group setting. Applicants should wear casual Griffon gear and come prepared to participate and contribute to team efforts. You’ll sign up for your group interview at the completion of your application. Spaces are limited, so complete your application early to ensure you have a time that works for your schedule.

Group Interviews are available at the following times  (spots are limited):

  • Wednesday, November 4th @ 5:00 p.m.
  • Thursday November 5th @ 4:00 p.m.
  • Friday, November 6th @ 9:30 a.m.
  • Friday, November 6th @ 1:30 p.m.

As a returning mentor, you will not complete an individual interview. Instead, you will submit a personal statement video answering the questions provided here. Personal statements must be submitted by November 1st at 11:59 p.m.

Directions:

  • Dress professionally as you would for an interview and record in a space without distractions.
  • Using your cell phone or webcam record a 5-8 minute video that answers the questions found here.
  • Review your video, it is a great opportunity to see how you perform in an interview setting.
  • Submit your video by uploading it to Google Drive with your LastnameFirstnamePS (ex: StallbaumerMelissaPS) as the title. If you have trouble uploading the video, you may email the video to me.

Frequently Asked Questions

Returning Transition Mentors will attend the final four Transition Mentor training sessions to learn updates, review information, and connect as a team. Returning Transition Mentors will receive a $40.00 scholarship at the completion of all four training sessions.

You can apply to be an Orientation Leader or Griffon Edge mentor. Seniors graduating in December should not apply for a Student Ambassador or Showcase Leader role.

Senior Transition Mentor

Senior Transition Mentors (STMs) are selected to support the logistics and operation of summer programs including Griffon Orientation and Griffon Edge. STMs serve in a peer leader role, support event set up and operation, and assist with pre-event set up for Griffon Edge. Preference is given to mentors who have served as a mentor for 2+ years, but any returning mentor who has held multiple Transition Mentor positions may apply. 

Trying to decide if this position is for you? In this role you:

  • Step away from 1:1 mentoring of first-year students to assisting with group goals and event set up
  • Arrive early and have added training, set-up hours, and expectations
  • Solve problems independently – STMs are trained to be able to assist professional staff during events, so they must have a strong understanding of all aspects of current programs
  • Lead teams of their peers

All Senior Transition Mentor applicants will be required to complete an individual interview. Individual interviews are business casual dress and they will be conducted in Eder 101. Applicants will sign up for an individual interview time through their application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Senior Transition Mentors will assist with the facilitation of the 10-week training curriculum for first-year mentors in the spring. STMs will also participate in an STM Training Retreat in the spring (to be planned based on STM schedules) and logistics training in August prior to Griffon Edge.

No, the application to be a Senior Transition Mentor will serve as both. Individuals not selected for STM roles will be considered for the standard Returning Transition Mentor role.
