"And For a Breath"
January 2018, the MWSU Chamber Singers were selected to perform at the Missouri Music Educators Conference and In-service at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach. They performed “And For A Breath,” a song composed by Ryan Main. With help from the MWSU Foundation grant, Main was commissioned by Dr. Elise Hepworth, Chamber Singer director, to compose music from the words of the poem “Barter,” by Sara Teasdale. The Missouri Western Arts Society also contributed to the performance.
Main also visited with students on campus as they learned the song.
The performance was a huge hit at the conference. The words to the song are below, and you can watch the video here.
Life has loveliness to sell
Music like a curve of gold
Scent of pine trees in the rain
Eyes that love you,
Arms that hold.
And for your spirit’s still delight
Holy thoughts that star the night.
Spend all you have for loveliness;
Buy it now and never count the cost;
For one white singing hour of peace
Count many a year of strife well lost,
And for a breath of ecstasy
Give all you have been or could be.
