Missouri Western Scholarships - Freshmen

Alumni Legacy Scholarship
This $500 scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis to first-time freshmen students who are the son or daughter of an alumnus of Missouri Western State University and have earned a 3.0 High School GPA (on a 4.0 scale). This scholarship is non-renewable.

Deans’ Academic Scholarship (Gold Level)
This scholarship is awarded annually to first-time students who have earned a minimum composite of 21 on the ACT and have an overall 3.00 GPA for all high school coursework. The scholarship is worth an amount up to $1,000 a year. The student must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA for renewal and successfully complete at least 24 credit hours during the academic year. This scholarship may not be used in combination with other Gold Level Scholarships. Renewable for up to 8 semesters.

Dr. James & Lauren Scanlon Scholarship
This is a non-renewable award based on community service record; and two letters of recommendation (one personal and one from a community service site). Award recipients must continue to participate in community service while at Missouri Western; and live in the residence halls. The award is valued at up to $1,000.

e2 Scholarship
The e2 Scholarship is awarded annually to one first-time student who has earned a minimum composite of 21 on the ACT and have participated in the e2 (emPowerU) Youth Empowerment Program sponsored by the Heartland Foundation in St. Joseph; Missouri. The scholarship is worth an amount up to $1,000 a year for up to four years (8 semesters). The student must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and successfully complete a minimum of 24 credit hours during the academic year for renewal.

Edith C. Brown Scholarship
This competitive book scholarship is awarded annually to first generation college students, students with financial need, or students who have participated in Upward Bound, Talent Search, 21st Century, or similar program. Preference will be given to students living in the residence halls and those with a record of good character and service to their community. The one-time scholarship is worth an amount up to $500.

GED and HiSet Scholarship (Gold Level)
This scholarship is awarded annually to individuals who are entering college for the first time and score 2750 or higher on the General Education Development Test (GED) or a 75 on the HiSet. The scholarship is worth an amount up to $500 per year if the student is enrolled in 12 hours or more. The award may be prorated for students enrolled between 6 and 12 hours. The award must be used in the students first twelve semesters. The student must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA for renewal. Students who scored a 285 or higher on the GED Test prior to 2002 are eligible for this scholarship. This scholarship may not be combined with other Gold Level Scholarships.

Golden Griffon Scholarship (Gold Level – Competitive)
This award provides outstanding incoming freshmen with a four-year renewable scholarship valued at up to $5,000 per year. For those who choose to live on-campus, the scholarship will also include the cost of a room on the Academic Achievement Floor in Vaselakos Hall. Requirements for the Golden Griffon candidacy include: a composite ACT score of 27 or above; ranking in the top 10% of his or her high school class or an overall un-weighted GPA of 3.5 for all high school coursework; and evidence of involvement in extracurricular activities and community service. Applicants are required to submit one essay and may be required to attend a personal interview or campus visit. Recipients must pursue General Studies Honors; be an active member in an MWSU club or organization, maintain a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA; and successfully complete a minimum of 24 credit hours during the academic year for renewal. The Golden Griffon Scholarship may not be combined with other Gold Level Scholarships. Renewable for up to 8 semesters.

Governors’ Academic Scholarship (Gold Level)
This scholarship is awarded annually to first-time students who have earned a minimum composite score of 23 on the ACT and have earned an overall 3.30 GPA for all high school coursework. The scholarship is worth an amount up to $2,600 per year. The student must maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and successfully complete a minimum of 24 credit hours during the academic year for renewal. This scholarship may not be combined with other Gold Level Scholarships. Renewable for up to 8 semesters.

IB Certificate Scholarship (Gold Level)
This scholarship is awarded to first-time freshmen who have successfully completed two IB certificates. The scholarship is worth an amount up to $2,600 per year. The student must maintain a 3.00 cumulative GPA and successfully complete a minimum of 24 credit hours during the academic year for renewal. This scholarship may not be combined with other Gold Level Scholarships. Renewable for up to 8 semesters.

IB Diploma Scholarship (Gold Level)
This scholarship is awarded to first-time freshmen who have successfully completed the IB Diploma. The scholarship is worth an amount up to $3,600 per year. The student must maintain a 3.25 cumulative GPA and successfully complete a minimum of 24 credit hours during the academic year for renewal. This scholarship may not be combined with other Gold Level Scholarships. Renewable for up to 8 semesters.

KCP&L Scholarship
This scholarship has been established to assist KCP&L customers with the cost of higher education. Criteria for scholarship includes: Full-time (minimum 12 hours) enrollment; incoming freshman; top 25% of graduating class; child of an KCP&L customer (account number must be provided for verification). Financial need may be a consideration.

Leadership Award
This non-renewable scholarship is awarded to first-time students who have an outstanding academic record; evidence of involvement in extracurricular activities; student leadership and government activities; and involvement in a community service project. The award is worth an amount up to $1,500. Recipients of this award must live in the residence halls.

Missouri Boys State Scholarship
Up to five non-renewable scholarships in the amount of $1,000 will be offered to first-time freshmen who were citizens of the previous academic year at Missouri Boys State and are enrolled as full-time students.

Missouri Girls State Scholarship
Up to five non-renewable scholarships in the amount of $1,000 will be offered to first-time freshmen who are enrolled as full-time students and were citizens of the previous academic year at Missouri Girls State.

Missouri Savings for Tuition (MOST) Scholarship
Missouri Western State University offers a $500 Scholarship to first time freshmen students whose families have established an account in the student’s name in the Missouri Saving for Tuition (MOST) Program. Ten non-renewable scholarships will be provided. Families will be responsible for providing documentation of at least two years participation in the MOST Program by submitting a statement from MOST indicating an active account for the student. Recipient selection will be based on need; as determined by the results of the FAFSA.

Missouri Western A Plus Scholarship
The A Plus scholarship is awarded on a competitive bases to first-time freshmen students who are A Plus certified and have earned a 3.00 high school GPA. This scholarship is renewable for 8 semesters with a 3.25 GPA and successful completion of 24 credit hours during the academic year. This award is valued at up to $1,500 per year. Residents of Buchanan and Andrew counties in Missouri are eligible to receive an additional $500 per year. The A Plus Scholarship may be received in addition to federal and state grants and most Missouri Western scholarships.

President’s Academic Scholarship (Gold Level)
This scholarship is awarded annually to first-time freshmen who have earned a minimum composite ACT of 26 and have an overall 3.50 GPA for all high school coursework. The scholarship is worth an amount up to $3,600 per year. The student must maintain a 3.25 cumulative GPA and successfully complete a minimum of 24 credit hours during the academic year for renewal. This scholarship may not be combined with other Gold Level Scholarships. Renewable for up to 8 semesters.

Show-Me Scholars Award
Up to ten non-renewal scholarships in the amount of $500 will be awarded to students who have earned the Show-Me Scholars designation. The Show-Me Scholars Initiative was implemented by the Missouri Chamber Education Foundation and is part of a national program designed to motivate students to complete a more rigorous set of high school courses.
