The Career Development Center (The Center)

Explore, Envision, Succeed!

The Career Development Center (The Center) is a centralized, comprehensive operation geared to assist all Missouri Western State University (MWSU) students with their career pathing, career management and readiness needs. The Center is a full-function career planning, Office of Student Employment, External Employer Relations and Campus-Based Programs/Civic Engagement entity serving all MWSU students from freshman year through graduation. In addition to our services in the Center, students, faculty and staff attending classes at the Northland Campus location and the Craig School of Business (CSB) also have access to specialized career services within the programs offered at the satellite  location and in the CSB program.

Mission

The mission of Missouri Western State University’s Career Development Center, through partnerships with employers, faculty and staff, is to empower students to make effective career choices based on realistic self appraisals and comprehension of the world-of-work, resulting in self sufficient graduates who market their education, skills and experiences to achieve life-long career success.  Additionally, the Career Development Center provides programs and services that create opportunities for students, alumni, and employers to engage in mutually beneficial partnerships that meet the needs of an evolving diverse workforce.

External Employer Relations
The greatest offering of the Career Development Center (CDC/The Center) at Missouri Western State University is our promise to provide you, the employer, with the highest level of customer service. With a finger on the pulse of the business world, our staff consistently builds solid relationships with a clientele that spans the corporate spectrum. We solidify these partnerships by visiting your office, touring your facilities, reviewing your company history, meeting your staff, and assessing your corporate culture to better serve your needs.

In today’s highly competitive job market, proactive employers seeking to hire the best and brightest talent available are establishing their presence on the Missouri Western State University campus. As liaisons between the university and the workplace, our goal is assist employers with easy access to current students, recent graduates, and experienced alumni who are seeking new career opportunities.

On-Campus Marketing Strategies
The Career Development Center hosts an annual Career Fair each fall and spring. Additionally, the CDC sponsors an Education Expo.  Employers are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunities we present to advertise and promote their organizations, jobs and internships on-campus. A few of these methods include:

Class Presentations
As we provide guidance, support, and resources to clarify the connection between identity and fulfilling work, we invite our partners in the business world to join us in educating our students. As a guest speaker in one of our Career & Life Planning courses, you will have an opportunity to discuss a career topic or your industry field. This is a great way to connect with students, market your organization, and make an impression to generate student interest in your company and/or profession.

Workshops
Because we have developed a solid business liaison with you, employers are invited to develop and facilitate workshops on such topics as Resume Writing & Job Correspondence, Networking, Interviewing Skills, Dress-For-Success, and other business etiquette issues.

Mock Interviews
Employers are invited to conduct on-campus Mock Interviews both as a way to sharpen students’ interviewing skills and as another means to market your organization.

Employer Services
Whether you represent a Fortune 500 company with continuous hiring needs, or a smaller organization with need for occasional hires, we will provide you an array of recruiting strategies to meet Missouri Western State University top quality students and alumni who are looking for employment, internship, and summer work-study opportunities. Our comprehensive recruiting program allows you to:

  • Post unlimited job openings on our web-based management system. All job postings are free of charge.
  • Conduct on-campus interviews and information sessions
  • Set up an information table in our student union
  • Review resume books that represent students from a variety of fields and majors
  • Have immediate access to our career fair schedules, on-campus events, and other outreach opportunities

Goals

In order to maintain the mission, the vision of the Career Development Center seeks to:

  • Help students identify their interests, values, skills, and personality type; as well as facilitate an effective career exploration
  • Educate and empower students and alumni to become active participants in their continuing development as lifelong learners
  • Provide information and resources relative to careers, job and salary trends
  • Facilitate professional development programs that prepares students to transition into an ever increasing competitive global marketplace
  • Foster community connections between employers, students and alumni to increase recruitment opportunities
  • Provide on-campus recruiting, job postings, career fairs and other programs to maximize access to applied learning and professional networking opportunities

 Our Approach

Our one-on-one career advising is central in assisting students learn about themselves and, subsequently, the world of work. We believe that an interactive and developmental approach will assist student in the clarification of life and career goals. Therefore, each advising session is a critical component of the students’ success, because it allows us to tailor our insight and resources to each individual.

The lifelong process of career development begins with self discovery. In addition to our one-on-one advising services, we employ several assessment tools through which we help you build a foundation and uncover:

  • Life/Work Values
  • Skills and Core Competencies
  • Career Interests
  • Behavioral Style and Preferences

The assessments require that you meet with an advisor to help determine which assessment(s) are most relevant to your situation. If the advisor determines the Focus 2, Strong’s Interest Inventory, and/or Myers Briggs Type Indicator is appropriate, you will be given log in instructions and scheduled for a second appointment to assist you interpret the results.

The Career Development Center, a division of Student Affairs, exists to support all MWSU degree seeking students and alumni.
