The Painting program offers a firm foundation in the discipline, emphasizing the technical and visual aspects of materials and techniques. Students gain an understanding of the medium and strengthen their skills through the study of color, shape, texture and the physical properties of the paint. Frequent lectures and viewing of films help support the students awareness of the historical importance of painting.

In advanced courses, the emphasis shifts towards the development of a personal aesthetic.
The students develop a personal visual vocabulary and iconography that has continuity. Because it is common at this level for students to find themselves dealing with issues and images that do not adhere to traditional painting methodologies, there is strong support for interdisciplinary exploration.

The studios are brightly lit and open and measure approximately 1600 square feet. The layout encourages students to move about the space and engage others in discussion about the work.
