These disabilities can be physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disabilities. The tasks performed by the service animal must be directly related to the person\u2019s disability. Examples include but are not limited to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Guiding individuals who are blind or have low vision.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Alerting individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing to sounds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Pulling a wheelchair.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Alerting and protecting a person during a seizure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Reminding a person to take medication.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Pressing an elevator button.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-fontsize=\"20\" data-lineheight=\"30px\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Access Rights:<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Under the ADA, colleges and universities such as Missouri Western must allow people with disabilities to bring their service animals into all areas of the facility that are open to the public or students. This includes classrooms, offices, libraries, cafeterias, and other campus facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-fontsize=\"20\" data-lineheight=\"30px\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Documentation Requirements:<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Individuals with service animals are not required to provide documentation of their disability or the animal\u2019s training, except for vaccination records. Staff should refrain from asking about the nature or extent of a person\u2019s disability but may inquire whether the dog is a service animal required because of a disability and what tasks it has been trained to perform.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-fontsize=\"20\" data-lineheight=\"30px\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Responsibilities of Service Dog Handlers:<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h4 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-fontsize=\"16\" data-lineheight=\"24px\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Control and Behavior:<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Service animals must be under the control of their handler at all times.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The animal should be on a harness, leash, or tether, unless it interferes with the animal\u2019s work or the handler\u2019s disability prevents using these devices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The service animal should behave well and not disrupt the environment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If the animal behaves aggressively or poses a direct threat to others\u2019 health or safety, the handler may be asked to remove it from the premises.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h4 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-fontsize=\"16\" data-lineheight=\"24px\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Access:<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Service animals are generally allowed to accompany their handlers in all public areas on campus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In areas where animals are legally prohibited (e.g., certain research labs), alternative arrangements should be made to accommodate the individual with the disability.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h4 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-fontsize=\"16\" data-lineheight=\"24px\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Accommodations:<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Reasonable accommodations should be provided to allow service animals to accompany individuals with disabilities.
