A Hamiltonian Path Problem was solved biologically in vitro (by Adleman in 1994. This is generally regarded as the beginning of bacterial computing. The combined Western-Davidson team produced a working proof-of-concept to solve Adleman&#8217;s Hamiltonian Path Problem in vivo. This work was presented at the international Genetically Engineered Machines Jamboree at MIT.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Faculty Sponsor:<\/span><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<dl>\n<dt><b>Hellstrom, Steven, R., Chevalier, Cary D.<\/b>.\u00a0<i>SUMMER DEN SITE SELECTION BY MALE RACCOONS IN AN URBAN SETTING IN NORTHWEST MISSOURI.<\/i>.<\/dt>\n<dd>Our goal: test the prediction that raccoons do not evaluate potential den sites prior to selecting one for the day. Our hypothesis: diurnal den sites chosen by male raccoons do not differ in their multivariate characteristics from immediately-available alternative satellite sites. We captured male raccoons in the MWSU Biological Conservation Area then fitted them with radio transmitters. We located each raccoon daily to determine the nature of the diurnal den site chosen. Each den site location was recorded using global positioning system (GPS) receivers and plotted with a geographic information systems (GIS) program. Twenty-two physical characteristics of the den and immediate surrounding topography\/habitat were quantified for each den and two randomly chosen alternate satellite sites. Stepwise discriminant function analysis (DFA) was used to build a model of den site characteristics using the data from the raccoon-chosen dens and one of the two satellite sites. Four DFA models were tested and all four successfully differentiated between actual raccoon-selected dens and alternative satellite sites during summer 2007 (P &lt; 0.05). Model efficiency ranged from 80% &#8211; 93.3%. Male raccoons strongly evaluate potential den sites and select den sites based upon characteristics that included some of the variables we measured, with some of these variables being more influential than others.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Faculty Sponsor:<\/span><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<dl>\n<dt><b>Hellstrom, Steven R., Chevalier, Cary D.<\/b>.\u00a0<i>BLOOD SERUM CHEMISTRY AND HEMATOLOGY IN FIELD-FRESH OPOSSUMS IN NORTHWEST MISSOURI.<\/i>.<\/dt>\n<dd>The purpose of this study was to establish reference standards of serum chemistry and hematology of this population of opossums under chemical restraint. Twenty-three Standard serum chemistry and 14 hematological values were measured on 18 field-fresh Virginia opossums (<i>Didelphis virginiana<\/i>; 9 males, 9 females) from the natural areas on campus. Individuals were chemically restrained with a Ketamine-Acepromazine-Atropine drug cocktail. There were gender differences for only three serum chemistry values (P &lt; 0.05): glucose (males higher than females), ALT(SGPT; females higher than males), and BUN\/creatinine ratio (females higher than males). No significant gender differences (P &gt; 0.05) were observed among hematological values. Blood chemistry and hematology profiles are important for establishing normal health profiles which, in turn, are essential for monitoring population health. Drugs used for chemical restraint often impact \u201cnormal\u201d blood chemistry profiles. We sampled three locations starting at where the stream spills into the Missouri River and ending under where the stream flows under the railroad tracks. A kick net was used to collect the specimens. The samples were taken by alternating from ripples to runs. The kick net was placed in the designated area and a small area in front of the water and the specimens were collected and placed in alcohol to be identified later. We did a study on what species of insects visited plants that grew in the state of Missouri. Our sample area was Hesnalts garden in St. Joseph Missouri. There were a variety of types of plants like: coxcomb, impatient, and chrysanthemum. The insects that visited the plants were Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera and Coleoptera. By far the most active pollinator of these plants was Lepidoptera. We came to say that there is an adaptation in color when it comes to the insects that eat nectar but there is not adaptation when it comes to eating the pollen.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Faculty Sponsor:<\/span><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h3>URSI Presentation<\/h3>\n<dl>\n<dt><b>Mohamed, Angela, and Walton, Kristen<\/b>.\u00a0<i>EFFECTS OF LIPOPOLYSACCHARIDE ON COLLAGEN EXPRESSION AND SECRETION BY INTESTINAL MYOFIBROBLASTS<\/i>.<\/dt>\n<dd>Myofibroblasts (MF), one of many intestinal cell types, are important in wound healing. Compromised epithelial barrier integrity exposes MF to luminal bacterial products. We investigated whether lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulated expression of collagen, a protein important in wound healing. RNA was isolated from cultured MF after 1 hour LPS exposure. RNA concentration was determined by spectrophotometry and confirmed by gel electrophoresis. Expression of collagen and control GAPDH RNA was assessed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. GAPDH RNA was detected in all samples, but collagen mRNA was not detected in any samples. The fifth of these axioms, also known as the parallel postulate, states, \u201cGiven a point and a line, one line can be drawn through the point that is parallel to the original line.\u201d This axiom can be changed to construct different geometries such as hyperbolic and elliptical. In hyperbolic geometry, the parallel postulate would read, \u201cGiven a point and a line, there are at least two lines that go through the point that is parallel to the original line.\u201d Our poster will focus on the Poincare Model of the hyperbolic geometry, in which the entire geometry is represented by a unit circle. In this Model, lines are not conventionally represented as straight, but rather arcs on perpendicular circles. Taking this into account, we will demonstrate the oddities of hyperbolic geometry compared to Euclidean geometry, such as zero-sum angle triangles and Saccheri Quadrilaterals and we will also test Euclidean theorems to see if they are still true in hyperbolic space, such as the Pythagorean Theorem and the sum of interior angles in a triangle equaling 180 degrees.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Faculty Sponsor:<\/span><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<dl>\n<dt><b>Lewis, Aaron; Ritter, Michelle; Rockhold, John<\/b>.\u00a0<i>FUNDAMENTAL COMPONENTS OF THE PHYSICAL UNIVERSE\u2026..OR SIMPLE SHAPES?<\/i>.<\/dt>\n<dd>Platonic solids are polyhedra in three dimensions whose faces are identical regular polygons and whose edges are of identical length. Plato and the Ancient Greeks, in their love for geometry, called these five solids the atoms of the Universe. The Ancient Greeks believed that the Platonic solids composed all physical matter and were associated with earth, air, fire, and water. The Pythagoreans knew that there were only five of these regular solids: the tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, icosahedron, and dodecahedron. Our project initially focuses on illustrating some of the Platonic solids in three dimensional space using a variety of models. Second, our project combines linear algebra and the use of matrices with transformation geometry to model the platonic solids on a computer. This allows us to virtually manipulate the solids through rotating and resizing. Since the first major advance in three dimensional computer graphics occurred only within the last few decades, we regard this as a great achievement. This study examines crime rates in states with Truth-In-Sentencing Acts and Three-Strikes Laws. The results of this study indicate that there is no conclusive evidence that these sentencing laws act as a deterrent to violent crime.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Faculty Sponsor:<\/span><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<dl>\n<dt><b>Carroll, Donna<\/b>.\u00a0<i>UNDERAGE DRINKING ON COLLEGE CAMPUS<\/i>.<\/dt>\n<dd>A study at Missouri Western State University was conducted to test the possible contributors that promote and influence underage students to consume alcoholic beverages. The main variable used in this experience was \u201cGreek\u201d status. Does being involved in Greek organizations in college contribute to alcohol consumption amongst underage college students? Information was gathered through the use of second hand data, surveys, and in-person interviews. The purpose of this study is to get Missouri Western State University Law Enforcement students perspective on, if more females entering the law enforcement field has related to the safety of officers. However, Midwestern states have lacked thorough studies on delinquent juveniles within their region. Data was collected from Missouri\u2019s Division of Youth Services SFY-2005 on juvenile commitments. The juvenile commitments were split up by county and into appropriate Circuit Courts. The juvenile commitment rates per Circuit Court were compared to chosen demographics, including the poverty per capita, of each Circuit Court. In an overall finding, neither the poverty rates nor the chosen demographics showed a consistent, positive correlation with the juvenile holdings in the Circuit Courts.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Faculty Sponsor:<\/span><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h2>DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS<\/h2>\n<h3>URSI Presentation<\/h3>\n<dl>\n<dt><b>Hamzaee, Reza G.; Briscoe, Jason; Egbert, Anthony<\/b>.\u00a0<i>HAS THE EURO OR THE U.S. DOLLAR BEEN RECENTLY DEPRECIATED (UNDERVALUED)?<\/i>.<\/dt>\n<dd>It is argued by many around the world that despite the sharp increases in the value of euro versus the U.S dollar in the recent years, economic theory under certain conditions, predict that euro is still undervalued, and it may increase to a range of $1.45 to $1.55. The foreign exchange rate &#8211; related problems motivate this research. A continual excessive depreciation of the U.S dollar, in its adverse effects, could facilitate foreign accumulation of more American assets, real estate, banks, and corporations domestically and around the world; i.e., more foreign takeover of American assets could be realized. In its positive effects, more American exports (than otherwise) would be possible. This research would embody both a theoretical framework and the corresponding real-world application. The main research questions include the following: Which of the two currencies, the euro or U.S. dollar, is depreciated? What are the expected values of each of the two major currencies, according to the traditional economic indicators?What international trade and economic implications have been realized in response to variations of the euro-dollar value in the past half a decade?.Positive and\/or negative consequences of the cited \u201cdepreciations\u201d of one of the two currencies? Subjects for this study were recruited from a pool of male athletes ranging from 18-25 years of age from a Division II Midwestern University. For this project a survey design was utilized. All were involved in significant main effects or two-way interactions. For those who believe that the mind and body are different entities (dualists), how the two interact becomes the keystone of the problem. Through exploration of these different solutions, while incorporating the religious beliefs of a Catholic Christian and the influence of a college education, Ren\u00e9 Descartes\u2019 interactive dualism appears to be the most accurate conclusion to the mind\/body problem. William James, a philosopher\/psychologist two centuries after Descartes, also influenced conclusions though his pragmatic approach to such subjects caution one against maintaining any distinct stance.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Faculty Sponsor:<\/span><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<dl>\n<dt><b>Buczek, Erica<\/b>.\u00a0<i>FECHNER\u2019S DOUBLE ASPECT THEORY: A LOGICAL POSITION TO THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MIND AND BODY<\/i>.<\/dt>\n<dd>The relation of mind and body has been long debated. Fechner\u2019s Double Aspectism seems to be the most logical position to this debate. The mind and body are inseparable, yet different. They are two sides to the same circle. Double Aspectism is similar to monism. Though, it fails to name the entity which mind and body make up. This mind\/body position led Fechner to study the relationship between sensation and psycho-physical processes. Rene Descartes suggested that there were two substances to a person. One was the body, the material substance and the other was the mind, the non-material substance. Gummow and Janit (2002), suggest that the mind affects the body, the body affects the mind and that the two substances interact with each other, hence the term interactionism. The purpose of this paper is to defend my view on the mind body problem. I show that I take the viewpoint of dualistic interactionism because I believe that the mind and body interact and influence each other. I chose my side by reading others\u2019 views on the issue, and I agreed the most with Rene Descartes. It was suggested that affection was merely a conditioned response to being fed and that too much affection could damage a child (Blum, 2004). While some considered Harlow\u2019s work brutal, it may have been a necessary evil to evoke change.
