Eight Western students and two faculty collaborated with six Davidson College (NC)students and three faculty to design and engineer E. coli to solve a Hamiltonian Path Problem. A Hamiltonian Path Problem was solved biologically in vitro (by Adleman in 1994. This is generally regarded as the beginning of bacterial computing. The combined Western-Davidson team produced a working proof-of-concept to solve Adleman’s Hamiltonian Path Problem in vivo. This work was presented at the international Genetically Engineered Machines Jamboree at MIT.

Hellstrom, Steven, R., Chevalier, Cary D.<\/b>.\u00a0SUMMER DEN SITE SELECTION BY MALE RACCOONS IN AN URBAN SETTING IN NORTHWEST MISSOURI.<\/i>.<\/dt>\n
Our goal: test the prediction that raccoons do not evaluate potential den sites prior to selecting one for the day. Our hypothesis: diurnal den sites chosen by male raccoons do not differ in their multivariate characteristics from immediately-available alternative satellite sites. We captured male raccoons in the MWSU Biological Conservation Area then fitted them with radio transmitters. We located each raccoon daily to determine the nature of the diurnal den site chosen. Each den site location was recorded using global positioning system (GPS) receivers and plotted with a geographic information systems (GIS) program. Twenty-two physical characteristics of the den and immediate surrounding topography\/habitat were quantified for each den and two randomly chosen alternate satellite sites. Stepwise discriminant function analysis (DFA) was used to build a model of den site characteristics using the data from the raccoon-chosen dens and one of the two satellite sites. Four DFA models were tested and all four successfully differentiated between actual raccoon-selected dens and alternative satellite sites during summer 2007 (P < 0.05). Model efficiency ranged from 80% – 93.3%. Male raccoons strongly evaluate potential den sites and select den sites based upon characteristics that included some of the variables we measured, with some of these variables being more influential than others.

Hellstrom, Steven R., Chevalier, Cary D.<\/b>.\u00a0BLOOD SERUM CHEMISTRY AND HEMATOLOGY IN FIELD-FRESH OPOSSUMS IN NORTHWEST MISSOURI.<\/i>.<\/dt>\n
The purpose of this study was to establish reference standards of serum chemistry and hematology of this population of opossums under chemical restraint. Twenty-three Standard serum chemistry and 14 hematological values were measured on 18 field-fresh Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana<\/i>; 9 males, 9 females) from the natural areas on campus. Individuals were chemically restrained with a Ketamine-Acepromazine-Atropine drug cocktail. There were gender differences for only three serum chemistry values (P < 0.05): glucose (males higher than females), ALT(SGPT; females higher than males), and BUN\/creatinine ratio (females higher than males). No significant gender differences (P > 0.05) were observed among hematological values. Blood chemistry and hematology profiles are important for establishing normal health profiles which, in turn, are essential for monitoring population health. Drugs used for chemical restraint often impact \u201cnormal\u201d blood chemistry profiles. Normal reference profiles of animals under chemical restraint should be established and would be useful to anyone involved with wildlife health.

Ward, Victoria; Jointer, Patricia; Tallman, Brooke<\/b>.\u00a0MACROINVERTEBRATE DIVERSITY IN ROY\\’S BRANCH, BUCHANAN CO., MO.<\/i>.<\/dt>\n
We reported on species diversity and water quality of a specified stretch of Roy\\’s Branch (Buchanan Co.,MO). We sampled three locations starting at where the stream spills into the Missouri River and ending under where the stream flows under the railroad tracks. A kick net was used to collect the specimens. The samples were taken by alternating from ripples to runs. The kick net was placed in the designated area and a small area in front of the water and the specimens were collected and placed in alcohol to be identified later. During our visit on October 24 (2007) we counted a total of 141 specimens.

Wiegman, Allyson and Jamie Riley<\/b>.\u00a0POLLINATION BY INSECTS IN BUCHANAN COUNTY.<\/i>.<\/dt>\n
Pollination by insects is very common all over the world. We did a study on what species of insects visited plants that grew in the state of Missouri. Our sample area was Hesnalts garden in St. Joseph Missouri. There were a variety of types of plants like: coxcomb, impatient, and chrysanthemum. The insects that visited the plants were Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera and Coleoptera. By far the most active pollinator of these plants was Lepidoptera. We came to say that there is an adaptation in color when it comes to the insects that eat nectar but there is not adaptation when it comes to eating the pollen.

Mohamed, Angela, and Walton, Kristen<\/b>.\u00a0EFFECTS OF LIPOPOLYSACCHARIDE ON COLLAGEN EXPRESSION AND SECRETION BY INTESTINAL MYOFIBROBLASTS<\/i>.<\/dt>\n
Myofibroblasts (MF), one of many intestinal cell types, are important in wound healing. Compromised epithelial barrier integrity exposes MF to luminal bacterial products. We investigated whether lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulated expression of collagen, a protein important in wound healing. RNA was isolated from cultured MF after 1 hour LPS exposure. RNA concentration was determined by spectrophotometry and confirmed by gel electrophoresis. Expression of collagen and control GAPDH RNA was assessed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. GAPDH RNA was detected in all samples, but collagen mRNA was not detected in any samples. Future experiments will assess collagen expression after longer treatment times.

Allen, Julie; Gould, Geoff; Shipers, Rebecca<\/b>.\u00a0HYPERBOLIC GEOMETRY AND THE POINCARE MODEL<\/i>.<\/dt>\n
In his infamous work, Elements, Euclid set out to define five axioms to define what will later become known as Euclidean geometry. The fifth of these axioms, also known as the parallel postulate, states, \u201cGiven a point and a line, one line can be drawn through the point that is parallel to the original line.\u201d This axiom can be changed to construct different geometries such as hyperbolic and elliptical. In hyperbolic geometry, the parallel postulate would read, \u201cGiven a point and a line, there are at least two lines that go through the point that is parallel to the original line.\u201d Our poster will focus on the Poincare Model of the hyperbolic geometry, in which the entire geometry is represented by a unit circle. In this Model, lines are not conventionally represented as straight, but rather arcs on perpendicular circles. Taking this into account, we will demonstrate the oddities of hyperbolic geometry compared to Euclidean geometry, such as zero-sum angle triangles and Saccheri Quadrilaterals and we will also test Euclidean theorems to see if they are still true in hyperbolic space, such as the Pythagorean Theorem and the sum of interior angles in a triangle equaling 180 degrees.

Lewis, Aaron; Ritter, Michelle; Rockhold, John<\/b>.\u00a0FUNDAMENTAL COMPONENTS OF THE PHYSICAL UNIVERSE\u2026..OR SIMPLE SHAPES?<\/i>.<\/dt>\n
Platonic solids are polyhedra in three dimensions whose faces are identical regular polygons and whose edges are of identical length. Plato and the Ancient Greeks, in their love for geometry, called these five solids the atoms of the Universe. The Ancient Greeks believed that the Platonic solids composed all physical matter and were associated with earth, air, fire, and water. The Pythagoreans knew that there were only five of these regular solids: the tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, icosahedron, and dodecahedron. Our project initially focuses on illustrating some of the Platonic solids in three dimensional space using a variety of models. Second, our project combines linear algebra and the use of matrices with transformation geometry to model the platonic solids on a computer. This allows us to virtually manipulate the solids through rotating and resizing. Since the first major advance in three dimensional computer graphics occurred only within the last few decades, we regard this as a great achievement. Lastly, our project investigates the proof that there exist only five platonic solids.

The purpose of this project was to look at the relationship between sentencing laws in the United States and violent crime rates. This study examines crime rates in states with Truth-In-Sentencing Acts and Three-Strikes Laws. The results of this study indicate that there is no conclusive evidence that these sentencing laws act as a deterrent to violent crime.

Carroll, Donna<\/b>.\u00a0UNDERAGE DRINKING ON COLLEGE CAMPUS<\/i>.<\/dt>\n
A study at Missouri Western State University was conducted to test the possible contributors that promote and influence underage students to consume alcoholic beverages. The main variable used in this experience was \u201cGreek\u201d status. Does being involved in Greek organizations in college contribute to alcohol consumption amongst underage college students? Information was gathered through the use of second hand data, surveys, and in-person interviews. Results have shown that Greek involvement does have a significant relationship to fraternities at Missouri Western State University and their alcohol consumption, but shows no significance amongst females in sororities at the University.

World Of Confusion Sara Richardson The purpose of this paper is to illustrate and explain the reasons why a person will or will not intervene when they witness a criminal or domestic situation. Data will show that persons having personal experience or a career where they have experienced a similar situation tend to intervene more often than persons with little or no personal or career experiences.

I conducted a study with the use of MWSU students on victims and how they feel about Restorative Justice. Restorative Justice is a response to crime that focuses on restoring the losses suffered by victims, holding offenders accountable for the harm they have caused, and building peace within communities. \\\\r\\\\n

Today, more females are becoming a part of the Law Enforcement field, but are females actually helping solve disputes or causing more injuries to our officers. The purpose of this study is to get Missouri Western State University Law Enforcement students perspective on, if more females entering the law enforcement field has related to the safety of officers. I chose to survey only law enforcement classes so that I could get an idea if our future law enforcement thought the more females on the police force the more injuries would occur.

Beardsley, Brandy<\/b>.\u00a0COMMITTED JUVENILES: ARE THEY A PRODUCT OF POVERTY?<\/i>.<\/dt>\n
Juvenile delinquency has stereotypically been associated with poverty in many areas across the United States. However, Midwestern states have lacked thorough studies on delinquent juveniles within their region. Data was collected from Missouri\u2019s Division of Youth Services SFY-2005 on juvenile commitments. The juvenile commitments were split up by county and into appropriate Circuit Courts. The juvenile commitment rates per Circuit Court were compared to chosen demographics, including the poverty per capita, of each Circuit Court. In an overall finding, neither the poverty rates nor the chosen demographics showed a consistent, positive correlation with the juvenile holdings in the Circuit Courts.

It is argued by many around the world that despite the sharp increases in the value of euro versus the U.S dollar in the recent years, economic theory under certain conditions, predict that euro is still undervalued, and it may increase to a range of $1.45 to $1.55. The foreign exchange rate – related problems motivate this research. A continual excessive depreciation of the U.S dollar, in its adverse effects, could facilitate foreign accumulation of more American assets, real estate, banks, and corporations domestically and around the world; i.e., more foreign takeover of American assets could be realized. In its positive effects, more American exports (than otherwise) would be possible. This research would embody both a theoretical framework and the corresponding real-world application. The main research questions include the following: Which of the two currencies, the euro or U.S. dollar, is depreciated? What are the expected values of each of the two major currencies, according to the traditional economic indicators?What international trade and economic implications have been realized in response to variations of the euro-dollar value in the past half a decade?.Positive and\/or negative consequences of the cited \u201cdepreciations\u201d of one of the two currencies? Theoretical framework including a mathematical model of simultaneous structural equations, which would formulate the macroeconomic activity for empirical examination will be developed and analyzed.

The purpose of this study was to examine the incidence of chest pain in young adult male athletes ages 18-25 years of age and the corresponding actions taken to resolve or treat the pain. Subjects for this study were recruited from a pool of male athletes ranging from 18-25 years of age from a Division II Midwestern University. For this project a survey design was utilized. The results of this study and implications for nursing practice will be discussed.

This study measured the effects of primes representing different sexes (male, female, neutral), ages (adult, child), and plurality (singular, plural), on reaction times for targets from the Bem (1974) Sex Role Inventory. All were involved in significant main effects or two-way interactions. Three and four way interactions were not significant.

America is the leading world power; the forerunner in economics, millitary power, technology, and science. Progress toward the future means both convenience and consequences. This paper explores the elements of the current zeitgeist and how this is affecting science and specifically scientific research. With much of the government funding going toward defense after 9-11, and clean up after hurricane Katrina, little is left to be spread thin among social welfare programs, science, and the many other expenses of our country.

It is my intent to begin to determine if interaction with violent video games is more engaging than interaction with non-violent video games via the measures of galvanic skin response (GSR), respiration, heart rate, and self report survey. Agarwal and Karanna\\’s (2000) model of Cognitive Absorption will be used to assess \\”engagement\\” with the human-computer interface, as opposed to Social Learning Theory, which is often used to assess human and passive media interactions.

The question of existence and interaction between the mind and body, what is known as the mind\/body problem, has existed longer than the science of psychology, and there are many different suggested solutions. For those who believe that the mind and body are different entities (dualists), how the two interact becomes the keystone of the problem. Through exploration of these different solutions, while incorporating the religious beliefs of a Catholic Christian and the influence of a college education, Ren\u00e9 Descartes\u2019 interactive dualism appears to be the most accurate conclusion to the mind\/body problem. William James, a philosopher\/psychologist two centuries after Descartes, also influenced conclusions though his pragmatic approach to such subjects caution one against maintaining any distinct stance.

The relation of mind and body has been long debated. Fechner\u2019s Double Aspectism seems to be the most logical position to this debate. The mind and body are inseparable, yet different. They are two sides to the same circle. Double Aspectism is similar to monism. Though, it fails to name the entity which mind and body make up. This mind\/body position led Fechner to study the relationship between sensation and psycho-physical processes. Fechner\u2019s contributions opened up many areas of study in sensation and perception.

Are our minds and bodies separate entities or are they one in the same? Rene Descartes suggested that there were two substances to a person. One was the body, the material substance and the other was the mind, the non-material substance. Gummow and Janit (2002), suggest that the mind affects the body, the body affects the mind and that the two substances interact with each other, hence the term interactionism. The purpose of this paper is to defend my view on the mind body problem. I want to persuade the reader that interactionism is the best position to take on the mind\/body problem.

In this poster I state my side on the mind\/body problem. I show that I take the viewpoint of dualistic interactionism because I believe that the mind and body interact and influence each other. I chose my side by reading others\u2019 views on the issue, and I agreed the most with Rene Descartes. I also state in this poster why I think materialism is an inadequate view, due to our ability to think and feel.

This poster will show the contributions and influences of Wilhelm Wundt. It will show his contributions to and explain such things as folk psychology. The poster will also explain his views and contributions to experimental psychology, as he is a pioneer in psychology being a true experimental science. These contributions have had a great impact on psychology and the poster will also discuss that impact. The poster will discuss what has influenced Wilhelm Wundt with his ideas. It will also discuss what intellectual traits that he possesses and why we classify him a good critical thinker.

William James was a physician, and philosopher who obtained his medical degree at Harvard in 1869. William James became a teacher at Harvard in physiology and later psychology.\\r\\n One of James great accomplishments was his book, The Principles of Psychology. This book gives basic understanding to functional psychology. James wrote several other books and articles about psychology, philosophy and religious aspects. \\r\\nWilliam James contributed concepts of sensory perception, short and long-term memory, instincts of species, and habits. The concepts of emotions were collaborated to develop the James- Lange theory of emotion. William James gave to psychology the humanistic and non-technical approach with the concepts of \u201cstream of consciousness\u201d and another concepts to psychology is \u201cpragmatism\u201d. \\r\\nWith the numerous contributions that William James gave to psychology, physiology, and philosophy, it is understandable how William James is regarded as one of the finest psychologist to American Modern Psychology.\\r\\n

Zeitgeist is defined as the overall intellectual, political, and cultural climate of a particular historical era.Throughout the years the zeitgeist has changed and will continue to change as the years keep coming and going. The zeitgeist is emphasized by the naturalistic theory. The naturalistic theory is an approach emphasizing the forces of history that act on individuals, versus the personalistic theory which implies that important events in history result from the heroic actions of individuals and without those individuals history would be very different. This presentation is going to discuss modern America\u2019s zeitgeist. This presentation will discuss the intellectual climate of 2007.

The mind\/body problem is not unique to psychology, but it has had a profound effect on psychology since its beginning. While this issue is a very important one and may never be solved, it may not be something that psychology should be concerned with at all. Psychology is a science and as such should be concerned with things that are testable using the scientific method. If the psychologist takes the position of physiological monism they can test the mechanics of the brain and leave the concept of the soul to other disciplines such as theology.

Sherman, Sheryl L.<\/b>.\u00a0HARRY HARLOW: THE MAN, THE MONKEYS, AND THE MEANING OF LOVE<\/i>.<\/dt>\n
Harry Harlow\u2019s most prominent research studies of surrogate mothers for rhesus macaque monkeys challenged the dogma of the time that suggested that affection was not only unnecessary for proper emotional development, but was also discouraged. It was suggested that affection was merely a conditioned response to being fed and that too much affection could damage a child (Blum, 2004). While some considered Harlow\u2019s work brutal, it may have been a necessary evil to evoke change. Harlow\u2019s findings showed the importance of love and affection, and influenced change in childrearing practices.

Henry Murray was born in New York City to a set of wealthy parents. By 1927 Murray had a M.D, AN M.A and a Ph.D.By 1937 Murray was hired to work at the Harvard Psychological Clinic.Then in 1938 his novel \\\\\\”Explorations in Personality\\\\\\” was released. In this novel it was laid out a personality theory based on three types of needs. The first need is the viscerogenic or internal needs, then theres psychological needs and process needs.

While each attempt was different, such as Kelly\u2019s cognitive constructs, Ellis\u2019 \u201cA-B-C\u201d, and Lazarus\u2019 \u201cBASIC-ID\u201d, all of them led to a successful form of therapy involving the thoughts and actions of the individual being treated.

It will show the main aspects of psychoanalysis and what Freud thought were the key structures to personality. It will also show the ego defense mechanisms and how they are used. The poster will illustrate Freud’s psychosexual stages of development a key aspect to his theory on the development of personality. Also shown are the two complexes he believes result from the stages of development. It will also give a brief history and current status about Freud’s life and how it may have influenced his work.

This poster will represent the Neo Psychoanalytic theories of Alfred Adler and Harry Stack Sullivan. Alfred Adler\u2019s and Harry S. Sullivan\u2019s concepts and theories were developed around \u201cindividual personality\u201d. Both Adler\u2019s and Sullivan\u2019s concepts state that interpersonal relationships develop into personality. Adler and Sullivan agreed that the social environment has an impact on personality development. The poster will also discuss various therapies developed by both theorists and their contributions to Psychology.
