2018 Spring Master’s Hooding

The Spring Commencement Ceremony
will be held outdoors on May 5, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Spratt Memorial Stadium.

The ceremony will last approximately two hours.

Graduates should report to the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex at 9:30 a.m.

More information will be sent at a later date to your Missouri Western email.

Commencement Schedule


On May 5, 2018, degrees will be conferred on all undergraduate students who have completed graduation requirements in the spring and summer semesters and the graduate students who have completed graduation requirements in the spring semester of 2018 during Missouri Western State University’s commencement ceremony.

Timeline for graduates and their guests:

  • 9:30 a.m. –  Gates open to Spratt Stadium.  No one will be permitted to enter Spratt Stadium prior to 90 minutes before the scheduled starting time.
  • 9:30 a.m. –  Graduates report inside the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex
  • 10:45 a.m. – Graduates proceed from Griffon Indoor Sports Complex to Spratt Stadium
  • 10:45 a.m. – All guests should be seated
  • 11:00 a.m. –  Processional begins

Following the ceremony, graduates and guests are invited to a reception in the tent near the parking lot of the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex. This reception is sponsored by the MWSU Alumni Association.

Tickets are not required for admission at Spratt Stadium.  Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Tickets will be needed in the case of inclement weather. See Inclement Weather Plan for more information.


Graduates will receive a diploma cover on the day of the ceremony with a congratulatory note from President Robert Vartabedian. The Registrar’s Office will mail your diploma approximately 6 weeks after your graduation term to the address listed on your graduation application. Please be sure your mailing address is updated.

Please note that official transcripts with graduation information and the MWSU diploma will not be released if any financial obligation exists with the University.


Undergraduates do not order their own cap and gown. These are pre-ordered for you and can be picked up in the Barnes and Noble Bookstore on campus beginning April 5 through May 4.  Bookstore hours are Monday through Friday8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Please note:  Graduates may not wear spiked heeled shoes on the field.  Only wedges or flat shoes will be allowed.


Degree candidates who will graduate with overall university honors wear stoles, which will be distributed during line-up information on May 5. Honor graduates are identified in the commencement program. More information can be found on the traditions page.


The ceremony will be held outdoors. Guests should dress appropriately for weather conditions including cold, wind, or sun and heat. In the event of rain or other inclement weather, the commencement ceremony could possibly be delayed or cancelled. Please see more information in our Inclement Weather Plan.


There are concrete steps on the Home side (south side) seating of Spratt Stadium with very limited chairback seating.  The Visitor side seating consists of metal bleachers and steps with no chairbacks. For more information, see Assistance for Persons Needing Special Accommodations.


Noisemakers, balloons, and coolers will be prohibited at the Commencement ceremony.  Smoking and the use of tobacco products and alcohol are also prohibited.  Please see our Alcohol Policy and Tobacco Use Policy.


Parking Lot I, just south of the stadium, will be reserved for handicapped parking.  A state-issued wheelchair accessible parking hangtag or license plate will be required to park in Lot I. Parking Lot N, west of the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex, is reserved for VIPs, Staff and Volunteers helping with Commencement.  A MWSU hangtag will be required to park in Lot N.  Other parking lots on campus are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Please consider carpooling if possible.

A shuttle will circle the main campus drive to assist in transporting guests to Spratt Stadium.

Passengers needing special accommodations, or those who may have difficulty walking across campus, may also consider being dropped off near Spratt Stadium.  Golf carts will be available to transport those guests to the field level seating.

A note from the Photography Company – GradImages is the official photographer for our Commencement. Proofs will be sent to your home and via email within three to five days after graduation. Pictures can be ordered online, by phone or by mail. Graduation Images can be contacted at Click on the pre-registration tab and enter the school name (Missouri Western State University) then enter your email information.

Registering your email with GradImages provides them with the information they need to deliver your graduation proofs to you in a timely manner. Giving them an accurate mailing address and email address will allow them to get your proofs to you on the first try. You may also provide them with email addresses of up to six friends and family members to allow them to celebrate in the accomplishment.


You may contact the Barnes & Noble Bookstore at 816.271.4457 to inquire about graduation announcements.  Also, a representative from Herff Jones will be on campus at the bookstore on April 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to take special orders.  You may also place an order on the following website:


The graduate march will begin promptly at 10:45 a.m. and proceed from the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex down to the field level.  The processional will begin on the field at 11 a.m. led by faculty, then graduates.  Faculty and graduates will then proceed to their respective seating areas and remain standing as the Platform Party processes to the platform.  Men will remove their hats and all will remain standing until after the singing of the National Anthem.


After the singing of the Alma Mater and the close of the ceremony, the Platform Party will lead the recessional, followed by faculty and then students. All guests are asked to remain seated until the graduates have processed off the field.


All graduates, along with their families and friends, are invited to attend a reception to be held in the concourse area of the stadium.

Students Graduating with Master’s Degrees

Hooding Ceremony for Graduate Students – A Hooding ceremony will be held in Fulkerson Center for graduate students receiving their master’s degree. This ceremony will be held Friday evening, May 4, at 7:00 P.M.  Graduate students should report to Spratt 214 at 6:15 to sign in and pick up their hood. Students will process into Fulkerson at 7:00 P.M.

Caps and Gowns – Caps and gowns for those receiving Master’s degrees will be special ordered (sizes should have been indicated on your application for graduation). You will be notified through your Missouri Western email account when the order has arrived. Hoods will be maintained by the Graduate Office until the day of the ceremony.
