Winter Commencement

Western held its Winter Commencement for summer and fall graduates Dec. 13. During the ceremony, special recognition was given to former State Rep. Ronald S. Reed Jr., who was instrumental in winning approval for legislation that moved Western from a junior college to a four-year college in 1969. Earlier this year, the Western Board of Governors approved a resolution renaming the central campus entry from Mitchell Avenue to Downs Drive as “Ronald S. Reed Jr. Way.” Dr. Vartabedian presented Reed with a street sign featuring the new name. State Rep. Martin Rucker, District 29 Democrat, was the commencement speaker and received an honorary degree during the commencement.

Western Governor Is Sworn In

The newest member of Western’s Board of Governors, Diza A. Eskridge, took office during the board’s December meeting.

Eskridge, of Weston, Mo., was sworn in by Circuit Judge Daniel F. Kellogg, a 1982 graduate of Western.

“I’m pleased and honored to have this opportunity,” Eskridge said, who graduated from the University of Missouri with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and then attended summer school at Western to get her teaching certificate.

In addition to teaching school, Eskridge worked in business before taking over her family’s feed mill operation in 1980. She sold the business in 1993 and later served on the Platte County Commission and as economic development coordinator for the city of Weston. Eskridge is president of the Weston Historical Museum and serves on the board of the Northland Community Foundation.

Eskridge’s appointment by Gov. Matt Blunt is subject to confirmation by the Missouri Senate, which will convene in January. Her term will end on Oct. 29, 2014. Eskridge replaces Janet Leachman, who has served on the board since 2003.

“I’m leaving the university in very capable hands,” Leachman said, pointing to Western’s designation as a university in 2005 as one of the highlights of her term. “Lots of people are finally realizing what a wonderful institution Western is.”

Griffs Giving Gifts

For the sixth consecutive year, Griffon student-athletes were able to spread lots of holiday cheer through the annual “Griffs Giving Gifts” campaign to area residents who are less fortunate. "Griffs Giving Gifts" is an endeavor spearheaded by the Griffon Student-Athlete Advisory Committee that raises money throughout the holiday season to adopt area families for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday. Members of the SAAC committee spent an afternoon at Hy-Vee collecting funds and spreading the word about the program. The SAAC committee raised $1,000 in a three-week period and were able to adopt six families for this holiday season.

Western Student Receives National Scholarship

Western student Diane Pace has won one of two national scholarships presented by Omicron-Psi, a national honor society for non-traditional students.

“Diane’s selection was based not only on her outstanding grades, but because of her level of involvement on campus,” said Diana Maunu, the organization’s president and founder. “Omicron-Psi believes Diane is an outstanding citizen who will continue to contribute to the campus and local community.”

Pace, a junior accounting major from St. Joseph, was honored for her work with campus registration programs, acting as a mentor for student-athletes, and serving as an office leader in the Non-Traditional Student Center and the Non-Traditional Student Club. She was one of two scholarship winners selected from among 92 chapters across the nation.

“I want to thank my family because they’ve been behind me the whole way,” said Pace, who also thanked two staff members she described as mentors—Cathy Gann of the Center for Academic Support and Ellen Kisker, director of non-traditional student services. “They’ve always let me know I could do it no matter what.”

Pace came to Western in 2005 when her youngest son also enrolled. Her son, daughter and son-in-law all attend Western.

Pace is the fourth Western student to receive the national Omicron-Psi scholarship.

Griffon Alert Test The Emergency Notification Committee has scheduled the first system-wide test of the Griffon Alert system for Dec. 16 at 10 a.m. At this time, a test message will be sent via automated voice messages to campus phones and VOIP phones in classrooms, beacons in campus hallways, Western TV channel intracampus, and outdoor public address speakers.

The voice message system will be tested twice. One test will be a digitally produced voice; the other will be a pre-recorded voice. These messages will be sent to VOIP phones, department phones, personal VIP phones and the outdoor public address speakers. The VOIP phones have been programmed to automatically answer during an alert and will play the message over the speaker phone. Department and personal phones should be answered normally. The person answering the phone will hear a pause, followed by the words “Griffon Alert,” another pause, and then the test message.

The alert beacons in the hallways will light up with flashing lights and an emergency sound will be emitted for about 30 seconds. The test message will be displayed on the screen. After the initial alert, the emergency tone will decrease in volume and beep every second with lights flashing every three seconds. The voice annunciators are not yet installed, so no voice message will be heard from the beacons.

The television monitors in the hallways of academic buildings will be interrupted with a message advising of the Griffon Alert test. The interruption should last about ten minutes.

Griffon Alert will be used in the event of an emergency that poses a threat to people or property, such as a tornado warning or a hazardous material spill. We encourage you to visit the Griffon Alert web page at http://www.missouriwestern.edu/griffonalert/ to learn more.

The Committee would also encourage those who haven't signed up for Griffon Alert text messages and e-mail alerts to do so as soon as possible. Everyone with a Missouri Western e-mail account can sign up two mobile phone numbers and two e-mail addresses. The only cost is your mobile phone provider's usual fees associated with text messages. You can easily sign up at the Griffon Alert web page link shown above.
