Tuesday, for the next week's issue. Tower Topics will be online weekly

Visits Western |

Governor Bob Holden visited Western Nov. 25 to participate in a
roundtable discussion on the link between
education and the economy in the region and the state. |

Alpha
Chi Initiates New Members
Western's Missouri Lambda
Chapter of Alpha Chi, national college honor scholarship society,
recently initiated 41 new members. For admission into Alpha Chi,
students must be of junior or senior status and ranked within the top 10
percent of their class. Each student initiated must also have a GPA of
3.75 or higher.

The objective of Alpha Chi is the
stimulation, development, and recognition of scholarship and those
elements of character that make scholarship effective for good purposes.
Alpha Chi encourages students to continue their development through
graduate work, supports a scholarship program in their behalf, admits
them to participate in regional and national programs and publishes a
magazine and newsletter annually.

1,100 pounds of food and $200 in cash donations for the Second
Harvest Food Bank. The citywide food drive collected a total of

Nontraditional
Student Loses Belongings in Fire
A Western nontraditional
student recently lost her home and all of her belongings due to fire.
She, her husband and three children were left with only the clothes
they were wearing. The Nontraditional Student Center is accepting
donations for the family.
The father wears shirts size
large and 33/34 jeans. The mother wears size 18. The 12-year-old son
wears shirts size 12, jeans size 10 and shoe size 4 1/2. The 10-year-old
son wears shirt size 10, jeans size 8 and shoe size 3. The nine-year-old
daughter wears shirts size 8, jeans size 7 and shoe size 2.
If you would like to donate,
there will be a drop-off box in the Nontraditional Student Center
lounge, Fred Eder Student Services Classroom Building, room 202.

Smokeout |

nursing students sat in the breezeway between the Janet Gorman
Murphy Academic Center and the Fred Eder Student Services
Classroom Building Nov. 20 handing out small bags of candy along
with tips on how to stop smoking to current smokers in honor of
the Great American Smokeout. The Great American Smokeout is a
national event sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Photos

Western
to Host Considering College Seminar
Western will host Considering College, a
free daylong seminar for adults who are thinking of enrolling in college
for the first time or returning after an absence. The program will be
Dec. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Fred Eder Student Services and
Classroom building, room 202.
Those attending will be offered Western
registration and admission information as well as information on career
planning and options. They will also have a chance to discuss student
experiences with a panel conducted by nontraditional students who have
returned to school. Offices on campus such as Student Services,
Financial Aid, Student Health Services and Center for Academic Support
will hold brief presentations explaining their role on campus. There
will also be an opportunity for a campus tour.
Considering College is sponsored by the
Nontraditional Student Center.

Registration
day for approved transfer and former Western students is Dec.9. This
day will allow transfer students and those returning to Western an
opportunity to register prior to the general registration on Jan.
15. Advising will take place in the departments on that day.
Advisors are asked to remind students that they should register as
soon as possible in order to get the best selection of classes.

Mark
your calendar: The fall 2003 Commencement Ceremony for Western
graduates is 4 p.m. Dec. 20 in the Fieldhouse of the M. O. Looney
Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building. Honored guest is
Kansas City Mayor and St. Joseph native Kay Barnes, who will deliver
the commencement address. Barnes will also be presented with a
Western honorary doctorate for her example as an outstanding leader.
A
reception for graduates and their families will precede the ceremony
from 1:30 3 p.m. in the Nelle Blum Student Union, room 218. The
pinning ceremony for nurses will be at 1 p.m. in the Thompson E.
Potter Fine Arts Theatre..The ROTC commissioning ceremony will be
held at noon in the Nelle Blum Student Union, room 223.

The
Office of Continuing Education will hold three upcoming three-day
Certified User Mapping Global Positioning Systems (GPS) workshops
Dec. 17 19, Jan. 7 9 and Jan. 14 16 from 8 a.m. 5
p.m. daily. Each workshop is limited to 10 participants.
Participants of the workshop will use commercial mapping-grade GPS
receiver systems. Lunch will be provided daily, and beverages will
be available during scheduled breaks. Credit and noncredit options
are available. No prior experience in GPS is required. Participants
should register at the Office of Continuing Education in the Leah
Spratt Multipurpose Classroom Building, room 105, or call 4100. For
more information contact Dr. Cary Chevalier, professional certified
trainer in GPS mapping and director of GPS mapping-navigation
program, biology department, at 4252 or cchev@missouriwestern.edu.

The
Western baseball coaches will hold three-day hitting clinics for
boys and girls ages 9 - 17 Dec. 21 - 23 and Dec. 29
-31. The coaches will also hold three-day pitching clinics for
boys and girls ages 11 - 17 Jan. 8, 11 and 13 and Jan. 14, 16 and 18.
Each daily session lasts for one hour and is at the Western
fieldhouse indoor facility. The cost is $49 per child.
Space is limited. Contact Coach Verduzco at 4484 for more
information.

Applications
for the Barbara Sprong Leadership Challenge are available in the
Nelle Blum Student Union, room 228. All
full-time Western students who have a 2.5 cumulative grade point
average are eligible to apply. Students who complete the
program without any absences will receive one hour of credit through
the Division of Continuing Education. Participants must agree to attend the
weekend retreat and all sessions of the Leadership Challenge . Applications are due by noon Jan. 20 and selected
participants will be announced Jan. 23.

Interfaith
Care Teams is currently looking for Western students, faculty, or
staff to assist elderly and chronically ill individuals in the Saint
Joseph community. Interfaith
volunteers provide visitation, respite care, and transportation to
those in need. Also,
volunteers can help with special one-time projects such as raking
leaves, moving assistance, and home maintenance.
This is a tremendous opportunity for you to gain volunteer
experience and to get involved with the Saint Joseph community.
