Engineering Technology Graduates Enjoy Breakfast Before Test
When a big test is on the day’s agenda, it’s always smart to start the day with a good breakfast. And the 12 students from the
engineering technology department who will graduate this month did just that last Wednesday.
On that day, the department hosted a hot breakfast for the graduates before they tackled the mandatory exit exam. Dr. Virendra
Varma, professor of construction engineering
technology and chair of the department, said this was the first time they had
held a breakfast. It was a good opportunity for him to visit with the graduates since he doesn’t always have the chance to meet
them as students.
He said the graduates also filled out an exit survey, which helps the department determine its strengths and weaknesses.
Kevin Walsh, who will graduate with a bachelor of science in electronics engineering technology, said that while it feels good to
earn a degree that he’s worked on for seven years, he’s really not finished. The nontraditional student is also working on his
computer engineering technology degree and hopes to operate his own business someday.
Jessica Ott was the department’s only female graduate at the breakfast. She earned her associate of applied science degree
in manufacturing engineering technology. Ott said she enjoyed the program, especially the hand-on experiences.

New
Recruiting Team on Campus
There is a new
team of recruiters for Western campus. They
include an Edith Brown Scholar, a tennis athlete, and students of many
different majors and internship experiences.
The “Gold
Rushers” are a group of eight Western students that call prospective
high school students. The telecounseling team calls about 14,000
students and schedules approximately 450 campus visits per year with the
goal of answering questions about Western’s programs, scholarships, and
the admissions process.
“I am extremely
proud of the telecounseling team,” said Kristen Neely, admissions
counselor and coordinator of the Gold Rushers. “We need to call high
school students
and let them know that we are interested in their enrollment and let
them know what this institution can offer them.”
The eight team
members include: Jami Bryant, freshman from Hamilton, Mo.; Danielle
Richards, freshman criminal justice major from Belton, Mo.; Kylie
Stewart, sophomore history major from Wathena, Mo.; Brittney Kelley,
junior nursing major from Kansas City, Mo.; Pamela Aseme, sophomore
biology major from Grandview, Mo.; Cassandra Gerhardt, freshman from
Booneville, Mo.; Kristen Grimm, sophomore nursing major from St. Joseph,
and Alison Wilkinson, freshman biology/health science major from Vernon,
Texas.

Students Present and Perform at National Conference
Eight students
recently presented a workshop at a national conference on student health
issues and peer education programs for colleges and universities in
Orlando, Fla. The students are part of an improvisational theatre group
on campus.
At the
conference, the improvisational team presented skits and monologues, and
held question and answer and audience participation segments on topics
such as date rape, alcohol awareness, low self-esteem and relationships.
“The feedback
on the presentation was phenomenal,” said Dr. Tim Crowley, Western
counselor who accompanied the group. “It’s a powerful medium to get
across tough information and they do it really well.” He said several
colleges and universities approached the group about not only performing
on their campuses, but also training their students.
Mignon Wilkins,
a senior from Kansas City, Mo. and the head of the improvisational team,
said she was a little surprised at the audience reaction to their
group’s monologues. Many cried and came up after the presentation
wanting to talk with them. “The monologues touched people in a way I
never realized.”
Along with
Wilkens, the following students attended the conference: Jasmine Thomas;
Sarah Ambriz; Brittney Kelley; Terrell Lane; Brent Matthews; Mallory
Paines, and Alisha Tanner.
Dr. Crowley
said the improvisational theatre group is part of Western’s peer
education component, which also is comprised of peer counselors and a
student speakers bureau. The improvisational theatre group often
performs in area elementary, middle and high schools.
“All three
groups are driven by students’ motivation and desire to help and serve
others. They get to help people and they gain great leadership and
communication skills,” said Dr. Crowley. “It’s great to see students
serving students.”
