Biotechnology Lab

The Mobile Biotechnology Lab made its debut at the My Success Event in the St. Joseph Civic Arena Oct. 6 and 7.

Western's Biotechnology Lab Hits the Road

Area middle school and high school students will have new opportunities to learn about science through hands-on activities with sophisticated scientific equipment, when Western’s Mobile Biotechnology Laboratory visits their schools.

The mobile lab, also known as the “bio bus,” will visit schools in Buchanan, Andrew, Platte, Clay, Jackson, DeKalb and Clinton Counties. It will also visit career fairs, county fairs, science events and anywhere else students and the public can be reached. The bus made its debut Oct. 6 and 7 at the My Success Event, a program of the St. Joseph Area Chamber of Commerce to introduce high school sophomores to career opportunities.

“The goal is to get students excited about science, especially the life sciences, as an academic pursuit and eventually a career,” said Dr. Gordon Mapley, Dean of the Western Institute. The area to be served by the bus includes both rural and inner city areas that are often underserved in science education, Dr. Mapley said.

Dr. Frances W. Morgan serves as the demonstration scientist/master lecturer for the project, and Walt Anderson the lab/administrative assistant.

A $950,000 federal grant secured by Sen. Christopher Bond allowed Western to update an existing mobile learning center with new scientific equipment and technology. Partners include the Missouri Biotechnology Association (MOBIO), the Institute for Industrial and Applied Life Sciences and the Western Institute.
