Western Set for Family Day

Fun, food, and football are just a few of the activities planned for students and their families for Family Day at Western on Sept. 18, hosted by the Parent’s Council and Student Government Association.

Events will begin at 9:30 a.m. near the entrance of Spratt Memorial Stadium with various student clubs and organizations providing booths with food and games, including a dunking tank with a chance to dunk a faculty member. The Western Planetarium will present shows from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the Campus Activity Board (CAB) will also provide activities that will appeal to kids of all ages. A buffet lunch will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Parents will have an opportunity to attend an information meeting to discuss public safety, residential life, counseling services, recreational services, student services and Aramark food service. Representatives from these campus units will be available to answer questions, and interested parents will be given the opportunity to become active participants of Western’s Parent’s Council.

At 2 p.m. the Western football team will play host to Emporia State.

Jacques Julliard to Speak at Western

Western will host history expert Jacques Julliard Sept. 23. He will present “The United States, France and Europe: A Conflicting Friendship” at 7 p.m. in the Leah Spratt Multipurpose Classroom Building, Kemper Recital Hall, and it is free and open to the community. He will also speak to classes while on campus.

Julliard’s lecture will address why, although France and the United States have never fought each other in a war, the relationship between the two countries has been difficult.

Julliard is a graduate of the Ecole Normale Supèrieure and is an expert in contemporary history, especially the workers’ movement and the history of political cultures in France since the Revolution. He has worked as a journalist for the left-of-center liberal weekly “Le Nouvel Observateur,” of which he is currently executive director and a weekly columnist.

Julliard is lecturing throughout the United States. The event is organized by the Alliance Française organization and is sponsored by the departments of English, foreign languages and journalism; history, philosophy, and geography; and government, social work and sociology.
