Western Holds Banned Book Reading “Books become banned because people find it easier to control rather than discuss ideas.” That is according to Dr. Michael Cadden, professor of English, and one of the coordinators of the 10th annual reading of banned books at Western. Western students, faculty and members of the community will read books that have either been banned or challenged in U.S. schools in recent years and discuss what it means to be an open society. The event will take place from 7 – 8 p.m. Sept. 26 in Leah Spratt Hall, Enright Room 214/216. Refreshments will be served following the readings. Books that have been challenged usually contain difficult information to grasp, or books that some might find offensive, Dr. Cadden said. He noted that since the events of Sept. 11, 2001, we have struggled with what it means to be an open society. “Books become banned because people rightly observe that words are powerful but wrongly believe that suppression is better than discussion.” The reading is in recognition of the American Library Association’s annual Banned Books Week. Some of the books that have been read in the past are “The Catcher in the Rye,” by J.D. Salinger; “Brave New World,” by Aldous Huxley; “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” by Mark Twain; and “Harry Potter,” by J.K. Rowling. The event is sponsored by the department of English, foreign languages, and journalism; the department of education; the Western library; Prairie Lands Writing Project, and the student chapter of the National Council of Teachers of English. Western Recognizes 2006 Outstanding Administrators Three Western employees were awarded Outstanding Administrator Awards for 2006: Mark Mabe, information technology services director; Dr. K. Eugene Eulinger Jr., registrar; and Mark Linder, director of athletics. This award program recognizes and rewards exemplary performance by Western administrative personnel based both on performance of their annual goals and on their specific contributions to the mission, goals and values of the university. Mabe began his career at Western in 1986 and has served as director of information technology services since 1987. In this position, he is responsible for Western’s computing, network and telecommunications services. For the last 33 months, he has provided leadership on the implementation of SCT Banner, the new administrative hardware system for the entire university. Mabe graduated from Western with a bachelor of science in data processing and an associate of science in mid-management. Dr. Eulinger has served as registrar since 2002. Prior to that he served as registrar at Linn State Technical College. Dr. Eulinger graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a bachelor of science in agriculture. He earned a master of science in education degree from Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville; and educational specialist and doctor of education degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Dr. Eulinger has also provided leadership on the implementation of the university’s SCT Banner administrative hardware. Linder joined the department of athletics at Western in 1999 as NCAA compliance officer and was named director of athletics in 2003. Linder earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and a master of education degree from Wayne State College, Wayne, Neb. As athletic director, Western’s graduation rate of athletes has increased, and student-athletes have been involved in a number of community service projects. Students also recently approved a fee increase for capital improvements to athletic facilities. The three administrators also serve on strategic plan implementation committees. |

Campus Printing Makes Additions Campus Printing has made some new changes for the new school year. Not only has it added more service to the already large selection of operations, but it has also changed its name. Campus Printing and Design Services, formerly known as Campus Printing, has gone graphic. It is now a full-service design studio, designing hundreds of items a year for Western. In the past, Campus Printing and Design Services has designed items for Western Magazine, the athletics promotion materials, the Foundation annual report, the Max logo, and the President's holiday card. A huge addition to go along with the name change is the new photo database. Visit the website http://photodatabase.missouriwestern.edu/ to view images available for use in a variety of purposes: websites, presentations, publications, printed pictures and so much more. This database will make identifying the right image easier for everyone on campus. It also contains over 500 images and will continue to expand as more photos come in. Admissions Creates Website for Future Students The Office of Admissions has just gone live with a new website for future students designed to make their online experience smoother as well as leave them with a lasting impression of Western's quality. The new site includes the following enhancements:

The process, ONE STOP, is where all incoming students are directed to get started at Western and have an enjoyable online experience. CME PRESENTS: "THE FATE OF HATE" The Center for Multicultural Education would like to invite the Western campus to participate in its first anti-hate program. The purpose of "The Fate of Hate" is to expose students to the general concepts of civic responsibility and humanity by remembering those who have been victimized by hate in our society. The day's events will consist of:

Pictures will be taken in Blum Union, Room PDR Wed. Sept. 13, Thurs. Sept. 14, and Fri. Sept. 15. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Underclassmen are not required to schedule an appointment. MAX EXPERIENCE REGISTRATION Western students can register their family online for free admission to to athletic events. Students who have a current or valid I.D. card should sign up for the Max Experience at www.GoGriffons.com. This is the only way to register your family members. SOUTHSIDE FALL FESTIVAL PARADE Employees and their families are invited to ride the float/walk in the Southside Fall Festival Parade. Line up no later than 9 a.m. at Kovac's grocery store and look for the Western float! Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Contact Diane Holtz at 5651 or holtz for more information or to participate. CPR AND AED USAGE CHANGED Effective this year, CPR and AED usage has changed. The American Heart Association, American Red Cross and other training agencies are now teaching the new programs. The new is much easier to remember and will increase the ability to help someone in need. We would like to urge everyone to learn CPR/AED as soon as possible.
