The nursing department at Western has expanded in an effort to address the nationwide shortage of healthcare personnel. Starting this semester, the program will begin accepting 10 more applicants each semester, increasing the total to 50 students per semester. Dr. Jeanne Daffron, dean of professional studies, said the program has been filled each semester for the past several years. Last year, Western had more applicants than they could accept for the 40 openings and for this semester, department Chair Kathleen Andrews said they received 120 applications for the 50 spots. Heartland Health has partnered with the college to provide funding assistance to help pay for additional faculty members. The hospital will also provide adjunct faculty at the start of the expansion. The expansion is a piece of an ongoing wider effort to address healthcare needs in the region, according to Dr. Daffron. Increasing the number of openings is a result of a study conducted by the Regional Healthcare Workforce Development Group, a group consisting of healthcare facilities and schools, including Western and Heartland Health, in the region. The group conducted an extensive survey regarding healthcare personnel needs in the region and has been working to find ways to address the shortage. The group is also working with area elementary, middle and high school students and counselors to encourage careers in health care. "We see our role as making programs available and offering high quality programs," said Dr. Daffron. Western’s nursing department was recently notified that it had been granted accreditation of the program by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for a maximum term of 10 years, extending to Dec. 31, 2013. The CCNE board determined that the program met all accreditation standards. |

Justice Award Presented in MLK's Honor Western’s Center for Multicultural
Education (CME) will host its first Martin Luther King Jr.
Celebration Luncheon. The event will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 19 in the
Enright Room of the Leah Spratt Multipurpose Classroom Building.
“This is an opportunity for the CME to
join with members of the community and northwest Missouri to honor Dr.
King,” said Karl Bell, CME director. “We want people to know that
the King holiday should be a time when we honor the legacy of one of our
nation’s greatest leaders.”
At the luncheon a student, a faculty or staff member and a community member will be honored with a Drum Major for Justice Award given by the CME. Nominations were taken from the campus and community and are based on a demonstration of commitment to selfless service to the St. Joseph community and the northwest Missouri region, a commitment to academic excellence and scholarship and an unparalleled level of leadership. "(Giving the awards) is an opportunity to
honor three great leaders in the community who exemplify the qualities
Dr. King promoted throughout his life,” Bell said.
He said he hopes to make the luncheon an annual event. For more information, contact the CME at 4152. |

The Western division of continuing education is sponsoring a 10-day educational excursion to Greece March 12-21. The tour begins in Athens with other destinations to Corinth, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Nauplia, Olympia, Delphi, Meteora and Thermoplylae. The trip is open to nondegree-seeking individuals from the community as well as students. The cost of the trip is $1,599 and will cover round trip airfare from Kansas City, Mo., all ground transportation and sightseeing, accommodation in first class hotels that feature daily buffets, hotel tips, baggage handling and taxes. Full payment by check or credit card must be received by Jan. 19. Trip cancellation insurance is available for $99. Dr. Robert Shell, associate professor in the English, foreign language and journalism department, is the faculty coordinator for the trip. Dr. Shell has visited Greece and said he enjoyed the classical buildings and archeological sites that brought life to the old tales of Greek mythology. He hopes participants on this trip will gain a similarly unforgettable experience. Director of Extended Campus Dr. Brian Mann said there are many benefits of touring Greece through Western’s program. "Not only do travelers get to see the countryside and archeological sites, but their tour guide is a college professor who knows and loves the area," Mann said. "It’s an organized way to have an educated tour." To receive a full itinerary and application form, contact Dr. Shell at 4321 or shell@missouriwestern.edu. To receive information about any of the other 10 travel studies destinations, contact the continuing education department at 4100. |

Western Employees Display Generosity During Holidays Several children and families in the St. Joseph community
benefited from the generosity of faculty and staff at Western this
Christmas season.
Dr. James Scanlon and his wife, Lauren, headed a Warm
Clothing Drive on Dec. 17, encouraging employees to bring in winter
coats, gloves and other cold weather items.
At Western’s holiday brunch, each employee was asked to
donate a children’s book. The several hundred collected will be given
to the St. Joseph School District.
The Support Staff Association collected new toys for the Christmas Toys for Girls and
Boys of the Greater St. Joseph Area. They were donated to organizations
supporting battered wives, single mothers and other parents of young
children in financial need. The Support Staff Association also coordinated a canned food
drive for the Second Harvest Food Bank.
