Theatre Submissions

Those wishing to schedule an audition time or who wish to present a design or playwriting portfolio for a scholarship should contact Professor Dallas Henry by emailing him at dhenry2@missouriwestern.edu at least 3 weeks prior to wanting to visit campus. Students should apply for admission and financial aid to the university prior to their audition and have the above steps completed before arranging an interview. The deadline for auditions and scholarship is March 1st.

Those wishing to audition will be asked to do one monologue and if you are a singer, prepare one song. If we need to see more, we will ask to see other material. Please bring sheet music in the appropriate key and be prepared to sing acepella as sometimes an accompanist may not be available for the audition. Please be sure to provide us with any available headshots and/or resumes.

Those more interested on the technical side of Theatre, be prepared to show any design samples or portfolio materials you may have. Be prepared to answer questions in an interview type setting with additional Theatre faculty members.

Those interested in playwriting and scriptwriting can submit an original ten-minute play, original screenplay and/or any additional writing samples.

While it is highly recommended that those wishing to be considered for a scholarship audition in person, it is also recognized that that is sometimes impossible. We do accept DVD submissions. Those wishing to audition for a performance scholarship – either Musical Theater or Acting – should include monologues and songs as required for the live auditions (please perform all your required material). You may also include brief cuttings from shows in which you have performed. This is especially useful if you are interested in dance and the cutting displays your dance talents. Please include a written explanation of what is contained on the tape along with headshots and resumes. Those wishing to present their design portfolio should do so via CD or DVD is possible. Playwriting applicants should include samples of their work.

Submissions should be directed to:

  • Department of Communications, Theatre and Cinema
    Attn: Dallas Henry
    Missouri Western State University
    4525 Downs Drive
    Saint Joseph, MO 64507

Cinema Submissions

You can choose to submit a video or sound project as part of your application for scholarship. It must be submitted via a DVD or CD. Please list the project title, your role(s) in its creation and brief description of the project when submitting. Remember less is better, so give us your best work and not trouble us with looking at everything you have created.

You could also provide us with samples of any creative work. The following items are examples of what can be included:

  • Writing: Short Story, Short Screenplay or Stage Play, Pages from a longer Screenplay, Pages from a longer Stage Play, Poetry
  • Photography
  • 2D Artwork: Drawings, Paintings, Storyboards

Once your are prepared to present your materials, you must arrange an interview up to 3 weeks prior to your visit by contacting Professor Dallas Henry via email at dhenry2@missouriwestern.edu. Please be advised that you must have all the above steps completed before receiving a scheduled interview time. The deadline for interviews and scholarship is March 1st.
