Faculty and students in the Department of Communication Studies, Theatre and Cinema want YOU to share in the excitement building around our growing Theatre and Cinema program.
We have a dynamic, award-winning faculty, engaged and creative students, and a degree program that is unique to the region. Our blended curriculum prepares graduates for careers in Theatre and Cinema or for advanced study in graduate or professional programs. Our applied learning, hands-on approach means that Theatre and Cinema students develop as both artists and practitioners as they pursue academic excellence.
The culture at Missouri Western encourages collaborative efforts among students and faculty across disciplines, particularly in the arts. Faculty and students from Theatre and Cinema, Art, and Music join together each year to host the annual “Lights and Tights” fundraiser for Musical Theatre at Western. This night of song, food and frolic has become a favorite fall event across campus and the community! Our Spring 2011 musical theatre collaborative production of Phantom sold out every performance! The Fall 2010 production of Neil Simon’s Laughter on the 23rd Floor brought in the largest single night audience for a non-musical theatrical production in Western’s history, nearly filling the 400+ seat main stage Potter Theatre.
This year, Cinema students hosted a Los Angeles client from Themanregistry.com, who reviewed their original commercial spots and selected two to be produced and directed by Westerns students. Editing and Audio classes then helped develop the spots into 30 second commercials that were delivered to the client. These spots are currently on the Manregistry.com’s website and can be seen in regional markets. Five top notch short films were written, directed and produced in the spring by Cinema students and will be submitted to film festivals across the country starting in the fall. In May, Cinema students hosted a night of screenings, showcasing an exceptional array of short films and commercials displaying the wonderful talent at Western! This summer, Cinema students are developing a viral and commercial marketing campaign for the University as well as a new app for the iPhone.
Next year, the campus will be buzzing with activity as we mount four main-stage theatrical productions including a special Christmas show running for two weekends. Cinema students will again be developing professional spots for clients in the directing and producing classes, an annual applied learning experience. The Cinema program, with support from Western’s Foundation, is investing in state of the art cameras to help provide our students with the very best, cutting edge training. Our goal is to become an all HD program!
Through outreach to the campus and community, our students truly are engaged in the business of learning their craft. And, our dedicated and hard-working faculty truly is engaged in the business of mentoring students in this important process. The learning community created here at Western reflects our core values of Service, Quality, Enthusiasm, Freedom, Respect and Courage. We walk the talk!
