Degree and Teacher Education requirements---Western Teacher Education recommends
you to the state for certification.
See the appropriate section in the Western Catalog for each teaching area (e.g., Elementary Education, Biology, Music, etc.).
Talk to the appropriate department for
advising. If Elementary Education, call Mrs. Talley or Mrs. Crisler at 816-271-4332 to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor.

Western's Alternative Certification Program (ACP)
|
A 25 credit hour intense certification
program for those who are willing to complete certification requirements
while they are teaching full-time.

This certification program is met through
a four-way partnership between the applicant, a sponsoring school district,
the University where you are seeking an Education Degree, and the State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
The DESE web site to the left will give you more information. You will need to work with an administrator from the school district with which you are seeking employment and contact the Placement Coordinator at your University to complete this process.

You possess a completed Bachelors degree and wish to add teacher certification in exactly the same area as your completed degree. You will be working with a representative of the appropriate major department: Music, Math, Foreign Language, History, Art, Science, English, P.E., Speech/Theatre [MWSU can only give certification in these areas]. You will meet with a representative from your degree's department to complete DESE requirements for certification and the degree department's program requirements. You must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or above from your last degree and have an ACT or SAT score on file at our university. You are not required to take the C-Base exam. a. Go to DESE's list of certification requirements to compare the courses on your transcript(s) with the state requirements for the discipline in which you are seeking certification. b. Bring an unofficial copy of your transcripts to be used for a comparison to DESE requirements. c. Call or email a representative from the department that matches your bachelors degree for an appointment to review your transcripts in order to see if Western is a good match for you and if we will accept you into the Certification Only path. The department representative can also advise you on the Professional Sequence you must complete for the Education Department in order to add certification to your current degree.
