Psychology photoDo students have the opportunity for research?

Students have plenty of opportunities to explore the interesting and varied areas of Psychology. At Western, 100% of Psychology majors are engaged in research. Majors often work one-on-one with faculty members on research projects, and small research teams are also common in the department. Recent research projects included “Glucose and Memory,” “Psychological Factors in Blood Pressure Regulation,” “Group Development Over Time,” and “Self-Concept in Gifted Children.”

For a complete listing of Western Psychology students’ research projects, check out the National Undergraduate Research Clearinghouse website, clearinghouse.missouriwestern.edu, that was developed and maintained by Western’s Psychology Department, thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation.

What types of internships are available?

Students in Psychology have several opportunities to gain practical experience through internships before they graduate. Psychology majors have worked in local offices such as Riverbend Rehabilitation Center, Youth Services Group Homes, United Cerebral Palsy, Heartland Mental Health Unit, Buchanan County Prosecutor’s Office, Buchanan County Juvenile Office and Family Guidance Center, to name a few.

Do students present their research projects at conferences?

Yes. All Psychology majors are involved in independent research, and last year, 20 students presented research papers at Psychology conferences in Kansas City, Omaha, Chicago and Washington, D.C. One student won an award for a paper presentation at the Great Plains Students Psychology Convention in Kansas City and groups of students have won prestigious Psi Chi Regional Research Awards at the Midwestern Psychological Association. In 2010 Missouri Western will be hosting the Great Plains Students Psychology Convention.
