Scholastic Writing Awards Contest Judging

This is an opportunity to read works by high school writers.

Rebecca Dierking, Prairie Lands Writing Project Retreat director, had this to say about participating in the judging.

“Judging the Scholastic Writing Awards is a great way for me to challenge my concepts of good writing each year.  Our norming sessions at the beginning of each day of adjudicating force me to look at writing from different perspectives and to analyze why I feel a certain piece is good writing.  However, the day also is a refreshing change from my usual contact with student writing.  At Scholastic, instead of having to justify the grade, I mark the holistic score and move on, allowing me to more fully appreciate each written piece on its merits without the cloud of justification hanging overhead.  Plus, it's always a great time when Prairie Lands people gather, not only because PLWP people are fun but because there's usually food nearby!

How many would give this piece a 7?  These are the kinds of questions agreed upon during the norming session.

How many more do we get to do?

Rebecca is making sure everything is documented.

Pre service teachers to university professors join the judging.

Many wonder, how can I get my students to write like this?
