Goals

The quest asks students to consider the following higher order questions:

• How does an author's selection of point of view, setting, and plot elements affect a text's meaning and the reader's experience?

• How does culture affect the author's selection of point of view, setting, and plot elements?

In addition, the quest asks students to:

• Work individually and in groups to discover Internet information and resources on colonialism, Igbo culture and history, African and British literatures, plot types, Chinua Achebe, the novel Things Fall Apart, and a variety of writing techniques.

• Discuss the differences between British, African, and colonial literatures in order to determine how best to write a chapter of the District Commissioner’s fictional book referenced at the end of Things Fall Apart.

• Synthesize their findings to create a plot diagram for the novel, a plot diagram for the chapter they will write, and a polished draft of the chapter.

• Present their projects to the class using any method of presentation suitable for the classroom.
