* Some teachers are struck with inspiration by a bolt out of the blue; the rest of us, however, have to make do with more mundane sources. In this workshop, Valorie will shared her process for finding class activities and assignments in popular magazines. She will take you through the inspiration, adaptation, and re-creation stages of three such assignments she has used in the classroom that make students think about audience, read for different purposes, and create finished pieces with accompanying visual elements. You will then go on a safari of your own—stalking the pages of some current issues to feed your imagination, and perhaps coming away with some new assignments to try with your students. Valorie will share draft examples of the process she goes through to adapt an idea for the classroom, issues of a variety of popular magazines, some actual examples of finished student products, and a film clip that will help to introduce the topic.
