Mariedella addresses the question of what is essential in language
arts instruction at the secondary level and will offer ideas for integrating
literature and writing instruction effectively, for creating viable writing
assignments and ways to assess them, and for teaching grammar in the context
of writing.
*Unlike subjects which focus on a body of knowledge, the communication arts focus on our most essential skill as human beings: learning about the world and our fellow humans through language and communicating our feelings and ideas. Teachers new to the profession face the immense challenge our discipline poses: what to teach and how to teach it. Maridella will address the question of what is essential in language arts instruction at the secondary level and will offer ideas for integrating literature and writing instruction effectively, for creating viable writing assignments and ways to assess them, and for teaching grammar in the context of writing.
