“Bridging the Gender Gap in Reading and Writing” |
|
Betty Jo Hicks, Blue Springs South High School, Blue Springs R-IV School District. Discover ways to reach all reluctant readers and weak writers. Examine strategies to take the “wuss” out of reading and writing.
*Do you find that boys are often bored in English, reluctant to write in journals, unwilling to participate in discussions, or loath to show any enthusiasm about poetry? Have you been reluctant to acknowledge that girls, on average, just do better in English than boys? Research shows that there is a definite gap in achievement between boys and girls in reading and writing. Awareness and acceptance are only the first steps toward the solution. Discover ways to reach all reluctant readers and weak writers, and in doing so, start to close the gap. Betty Jo will share the research and examine some strategies to take the “wuss” out of reading and writing.
