ENG 500 Literature for Adolescents

4:30-7:20 PM Tuesdays, 1/19-5/11/2010 in Eder Hall 210 (3 credits)  

Instructor: Dr. Mike Cadden, National Writing Project Teacher Consultant, Missouri Western Distinguished English Professor, and English, Foreign Languages and Journalism Chair

Course Description: ENG 500 is an introduction to the genre of literature for young adult ("YA" or "Adolescent" literature) that appeals to YA from middle school to high school and beyond. In this course participants will:

  • Discuss the specific nature of YA literature as a genre different from both "adult" and children's literature by both degree and kind;
  • Consider trends in publishing;
  • Discover the issues behind censorship;
  • Learn about the history of literature for young adults;
  • Complete a research project.

Prerequisite: BS or BA degree. This course counts as an elective toward the PLWP Graduate Certificate in the Teaching of Writing and in the MAS in Assessment: Writing Option.
