The primary goal of the performance degree is to help the students achieve their highest potential on the piano, and to prepare them for graduate work and future performances. Students majoring in Piano Performance are given intensive study in their instrument, including weekly lessons, studio classes, and departmental recitals. Students will have the option for performance opportunities beyond the required Junior and Senior recitals, including regional performances, competitions, and the performances overseas in our summer programs. Students also may choose to accompany vocal and instrumental majors in recital or jury.
With the understanding that most performance majors will teach in some fashion throughout their careers, piano majors will also be involved in some pedagogy and literature courses, although not to the same extent as piano pedagogy majors.
Students will also be required to keep a portfolio of their career, which may include items such as audio or video recordings, recital programs, repertoire lists, competition entries and prizes, resume and vita, and a professional website.
