2009-2010 Meeting Minutes

Minutes of TWS Meeting September 9,2009

Treasury Report:

• This information was not provided to members, guests, or faculty largely due to the fact that this was the 1^st meeting.

 New Business:

• “Welcome Back BBQ” took place from 1800 – 1900 hrs. Meeting began at 1900 hrs.
• The meeting began with an introduction of faculty and guests.
• Membership was explained with the following information provided:
  • To be a member $10 for year or $5 per semester
  • Membership cards will be provided to paid members
  • TWS members of the student chapter must be members of the national organization; however they may wait to pay dues to the national organization until January 2010.
• A hunter education instructor course will be offered this year to interested individuals. All student members of the wildlife society should be interested in becoming hunter education instructors.
• E-Board members were introduced to attendees. The E-Board members are as follows:
  • President:                Rich Cook
  • Vice-President:             Ben Limle
  • Treasurer:                Misha Mazurkewycz
  • Secretary:                Teresa Ausberger (absent)
  • E-Board:                  John Powell and Wyatt Jackson

E-Board should be contacted for questions and a calendar with events is posted on the 2^nd floor of Agenstein.

• The point system was explained with the following information provided:
  • Members must complete 10 hours in order to obtain free stuff like paid hotel to the Missouri Natural Resource Conference.
  • 1 hour = 1 point
• The next meeting will take place on September 16^th, 2009 at 1800 hrs.

 Guest Speakers:

• Dave Weber
  • Received national award from Quail Unlimited for landowner farmer of 2008.
  • Suggested that the local quail unlimited and wildlife society work together on future projects
  • Website was provided : www.qu.org
• Corey Kudrna
  • Employee with US Fish and Wildlife suggested possible events at Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge.
  • These events are:
    • Work weekends
    • Wildlife Counts (deer spot lighting)
      • 6 possible nights
    • Burning October – June
    • Seed collection
    • Outreach (ex: Eagle Days)
    • Weekend Interns
      • Closed Application September 16^th, 2009
    • 1^st workday September 19^th, 2009
      • Campout on September 18^th, 2009
    • Additional workdays:
      • October 3^rd, 2009
      • October 24^th, 2009
      • November 7^th, 2009
    • Disabled Hunters hunt December 12^th and 13^th, 2009
    • Squaw Creek Deer Hunt January 2^nd and 3^rd, 2009
    • Assembly of wood duck boxes

 Old Business:

• This was the 1^st meeting, so no old business was discussed.

Minutes of TWS Meeting September 16, 2009

Treasury Report:

• Budget Report:
  • In April, the Wildlife Society had:                          $ 1090.14
  • From deer aging, we were paid:                         +   $ 1950.00
  • Pop machine contained:                               +    $  267.00
  • Membership received:                                 +    $  125.00
  • Cash on hand:                               +   $   60.00                       

Money in Bank:                                                  $ 3124.93

Total Money:                                                    $ 3184.93

• Members must pay dues:
  • $5.00 fall semester
  • $10.00 fall and spring semester
  • National dues are $36.00 per year
    • Wildlife Society members do not have to be national members until spring. This membership should be renewed each year.

 New Business:

• Point System was discussed. E-Board members stated that:
  • Members must have 10 hrs which is equivalent to 10 points in order to attend paid trips.
  • Point System will not begin for members until dues are paid.
• The Squaw Creek Workday and Camp-out will take place on September 18^th and 19^th, 2009 with a $5.00 charge taking place in order to cover camping and meal costs. Additional details were provided:
  • At 6:30 p.m. a BBQ will take place at Squaw Creek
  • A guest speaker may talk to attendees
  • Camping will take place at Big Lake Conservation Area which is about 10 miles from Squaw Creek.
  • Guests can attend the camp-out and workday; however they must also pay $5.00 to cover food and camping expenses.
  • Members and guests attending the camp-out must participate in at least ½ of the workday.
• The Chainsaw Workshop will take place on September 23^rd, 2009 at 1900 hrs. Maintenance and chainsaw operation and safety will be discussed at this workshop.
• The Bureau of Indian Affairs is hosting a S130/S190 Fire Ecology and Behavior Training course. Individuals who complete this course can potentially become Red Card Certified. This certification is federally recognized. In order to obtain Red Card, attendees must complete an arduous pack test which consists of walking 3 miles in under 45 minutes with a 45 lb. pack. With a Red Card certification, members can participate in prescribed burns and forest fires. This course will take place on the following dates:
  • October 17^th and 18^th, 2009
  • October 24^th and 25^th, 2009

On October 25^th, members who are already Red Card certified must attend the refresher course which will take place on this day.

• Pepsi will be providing a new soda machine to the Wildlife Society.

 Old Business:

• The Squaw Creek Internship was announced today and members were told about the closing application deadline.
• Additional Squaw Creek Workdays are:
  • October 3^rd, 2009
  • October 24^th, 2009
  • November 7^th, 2009
• The Hunter Education Instructor course was again mentioned to members of the Wildlife Society. In order to maintain certification members must teach 2 hrs. in 2 years. Rewards can be earned by enthusiastic instructors and the Antler Measuring Workshop counts for Hunter Education Instructor hours.
  • This course was narrowed down to the following dates:
    • Sept. 30 – Oct. 1, 2009
    • Oct. 7 – Oct. 8, 2009

   Open Discussion:

• Members decided which committee they would like to take part in. All paid members must be part of a committee. The committees are chairs are as listed:
  • Website – John Powell
  • Fundraiser – Wyatt Jackson
  • Membership – Teresa Ausberger
  • Activities – E-Board Members

Members of the Wildlife Society broke up into committees and briefly discussed ideas and what they would like to accomplish this year.

• Members should come up and sign their membership cards before leaving the meeting today.
• Anna and Ashleigh who are Red Card certified attended the Arkansas Fire Academy.
• Cooper briefly discussed his trip fighting wildfires out west.
• Project Wet and Wild was mentioned and briefly discussed. A flyer about this project was passed around at the meeting.

Old Business:

·   22 members attended the Chainsaw Workshop

·   For the camp-out/Squaw Creek Workday we had:

o   16 BBQ attendees

o   12 members at camp-out

o   13 members at workday

·  Thank you letters need signed and sent to the following individuals:

o   Chuck and Allen for Chainsaw Workshop

o   Dave Weber for Presentation

o   Corey Kudrna for Presentation

o   These letters have not yet been written, so therefore the signing of cards and letters has been postponed until later.

New Business:

·  The Hunter Education Instructor course is currently taking place in MDC 103. This training will go until 2200 hrs tonight and then resume tomorrow night from 1800 hrs – 2200 hrs.

·  The following events will take place a Squaw Creek NWR. It is the hope of The Wildlife Society that members will attend these events.

o   Workdays

§  Nov. 7^th, 2009

o   5K run/walk

§  Oct. 10^th, 2009

·  A sign-up sheet was sent around to determine interest in creating/revamping wood duck boxes. Several members expressed interest. For this project, dedication is required and The Wildlife Society will hopefully team up with the Waterfowl Association if this project is deemed “doable”.

·  Additional sign-up sheets were sent around to determine interest in the following events/activities:

o  Handguns/Rifle Workshop

o  Brushcutter’s Workshop

o Squaw Creek Deer Spot Lighting – typically do four nights, the last week of October and 1^st two weeks of Nov. Dates not set in stone, but usually occur Tuesday and Thursday.

o Eagle Days – a collaborative project with Squaw Creek and MDC that fits into our mission. We would assist with a duck wing maze and create a mock hunting spread.

o Community Recruitment – traveling to regional community colleges to get more people interested in The Wildlife Society.

·  Members voted to participate in the “Share the Harvest” project which involves taking deer from the meat processor to a food bank in Saint Joseph.

·  Several members expressed interest in assisting Rich Cook with the Pheasant’s Forever Hunt. Interested individuals were supposed to be:

o   Gun savy

o   Hunter savy

o   Experienced

·    The S130/S190 Wildfire Ecology and Behavior Training will take place on the following dates for interested individuals:

o   Oct. 17^th and 18^th, 2009

o   Oct. 24^th and 25^th, 2009

o   The Refresher Course will be taking place on Oct. 25^th, 2009.

 Open Discussion:

·  John Powell would like all individuals who have completed a summer internship to e-mail him with the details, so that this information can be placed on the website.

·  If planning on attending the S130/S190 Fire Training course, e-mails should be sent to Dr. Chevalier.
