Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity's Official philanthropy is
the Alzheimer Association Ronald and Nancy Reagan Research Institute.
This philanthropy was chosen to honor of one of our most prestigious
alumnus, former President of the United States Ronald Reagan. "Frater
Reagan," a Teke from Eureka College (Iota Chapter), and the nation's
40th president, served as leader of our country from 1981 to 1989.
Prior to becoming president, Reagan served the public as an actor and
as governor of the state on California (1966-1974). Reagan lived the
mission of TKE to contribute to the advancement of society.
Alzheimer's is a disorder that destroys cells in the
brain. It is the leading cause of dementia, a condition that involves
gradual memory loss, decline in the ability to perform routine tasks,
disorientation, difficulty in learning, loss of language skills,
impairment of judgment, and personality changes. As the disease
progresses, people with Alzheimer's become unable to care for
themselves. The loss of brain cells eventually leads to the failure
of other systems in the body. Currently, there is no known cure for
Alzheimer's disease.
Together, Missouri Western TKE and the Alzheimer's
Association are collaborating to end this deadly disease that affects
four million Americans, including Frater Reagan. The TKE Football Run
has become an annual event between TKE members from both Northwest
Missouri State University and Missouri Western State University during
which the visiting team's Chapter runs a football the 43 mile distance
between the two towns. The Chapters raise funds and contributions for
Alzheimer's, then give a sizable donation (along with the game ball)
on the 50-yard line to begin the Griffon vs. Bearcat game.
In addition, the Missouri Western Chapter of TKE also
helps us other organizations in our community. Our brothers spend
quality time with a group of kids from the Noyes Home, where we help
the kids with their schoolwork, have karaoke hours, play basketball
and softball outdoors, organize garage sales, and socialize. Brothers
also help our local Red Cross with donating their blood and plasma and
also help with Special Olympics every year.
We encourage all of our members to provide service to
their campus and community through national philanthropic activities.
Many of our members give of themselves yearly through such Student
Government events as "The Big Event," St. Joseph events as the Apple
Blossom Parade and Mardi Gras, and work as Crowd Security personnel
for numerous Kansas City concerts and Chiefs football games.
TKE at Missouri Western is one group among the many
fraternities and sororities who contribute countless hours and raise
millions of dollars for charitable organizations around the world.
