Prior to chartering as Tau Kappa Epsilon in
1971 we were a local Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity which went back to the
days of St. Joseph Junior College. From what we understand we were
looking to join Phi Kappa Tau National Fraterntiy or Tau Kappa
Epsilon Fraternity. Well by the end of 1969 we picked TKE and were
then the Phi Tau colony. And the original members that started this
fraternity are not on our scroll they are as follows, Terry Campell,
Bob Ouden, Dave Karriker, Louis Killackey, Dave Murawski, Greg
Smith, Phil Hestard, Dale Davidson, and Dave Jackson.
The Xi-Eta Chapter
began at MWSU in 1971. The first three members were Bob Donaldson,
Chuck Miller, and Bruce Windsor. Throughout the 70's, the Fraternity
was one of the strongest on campus and in the St. Joseph community,
residing predominantly at a house located at 28th St. and
Mitchell Ave. Then in 1982 the Xi-Eta house burned to the ground,
leaving members unmotivated and lacking the desire to continue on as a
Chapter. Xi-Eta TKE disbanded and was thought to be forever gone from
the Missouri Western landscape.
With visionary and
pioneering spirit, a group of men known locally as Tau Chi Upsilon
choose to realign themselves as a colony of Tau Kappa Epsilon in the
spring of 1996. Frater John Norton, with the help of Chris Uliana,
Joe Alderton, Justin Sizemore, Josh Rhunke, Mike Lewark, Scott White
and Jeffrey Peve brought Tau Kappa Epsilon back to the campus in a big
way, rebutting the “frat guy” attitude which they had seen promulgated
in other fraternal organizations on campus. TKE wanted to stand for
something different as men, and pursued this by a strong emphasis on
academics and campus/community involvement among its members.
Since then, the
colony of Xi-Eta has made its impact felt on campus, showing strongly
in professional, social, and academic organizations around campus.
Tau Kappa Epsilon, Xi-Eta Chapter was Charter on Jan. 10, 1999, at the
Hyatt Regency Ballroom in downtown Kansas City, and is now one of the
strongest Greek fraternities on campus. Our Chapter is active in the
student government Most Active Organization competition, the
intramural sports program, the Greek community, Fraternity of the Year
Award, the Residence Council,
the Campus Activities Board, and with many other aspects of campus
life. In addition, TKE annually hosts a campus “Teke Week” the first
week of April during the school year, a celebration of a successful
year which culminates on the weekend with our Red Carnation Ball,
usually held for 3 days and 2 nights at the Lake of the Ozarks. The
Xi-Eta Chapter is now as strong as ever and rapidly growing.
