November 3, 2008

Minutes by: Rachel Stancliff

In attendance at the November 3rd meeting were the four officers: Katy Strasser (President), Ashley Rainsbarger (Vice-President), Joyce Simmons (Treasurer), and Rachel Stancliff (Secretary/Webmistress).

  • It was decided that we will not be doing fund raising until we know what it will be for. What can we use the STC chapter money for? Can we use it to buy refreshments for meetings? Do we have to go through Aramark for refreshments on campus? We plan on having pizza and pop – or something similar that Aramark provides – at the next meeting, and will contact Dr. Jeney and Dr. Adkins on how to obtain the food and pay for it. Joyce Simmons will look into Aramark's menu and pricing.
  • For our community service, Katy Strasser suggested One Laptop Per Child, a non-profit organization that provides low-cost laptops to children in poor nations. Laptops are $200 apiece. There will be a brief presentation on One Laptop Per Child at the next meeting.
  • Flyers and promotional materials for STC were discussed. Rachel Stancliff will create a flyer advertising the next meeting and will also work on a general promotional flyer; Katy will get them approved so we can display them. Having Dr. Charlton and/or other instructors announce our meeting in their classes was also suggested - Katy or Ashley will contact Dr. Charlton to ask him if he will announce our next meeting.
  • The next meeting will be Monday, November 17, at 6:00 PM in Murphy 119 or the library. We will have a brief presentation over One Laptop Per Child, discuss fund raising ideas for it if need be, elect a new treasurer (since Joyce is graduating this December!), and will hopefully have a brief presentation by either Dr. Jeney, Dr. Adkins, or Dr. Charlton over what Technical Communication is, and maybe a little bit about the Tech Com program at Missouri Western. We hope to encourage new Tech Com majors and minors (and others interested in learning more) to attend the meeting.

April 25, 2008

Members of Dr. Adkins' ETC 421 Worlds of Technical Communication class were present, as well as other members of the chapter.

The new officers for the 2008-2009 year are:

  • President: Kathryn Strasser
  • Vice-President: Ashley Rainsbarger
  • Secretary: Rachel Stancliff
  • Treasurer: Joyce Simmons (until December 2008)

Rachel Stancliff offered to be the chapter's webmaster. The new officers and Dr. Adkins discussed getting hold of the Girl Scouts to find out if we can arrange a workshop for them.

Dr. Stacia Bensyl also gave a presentation on Japanese preferences in graphics and illustrations.

October 18, 2007

(Written by Matt Fowler and copied from the official STC/MWSU mailing list.)

The members attending were: Christina Dubach, Joyce Simmons, and Matthew Fowler.

At the end of the meeting, the focus of the chapter was to try to raise the awareness of STC and technical communications to the school and then to the community.

To that, the main focus of this chapter right now is a presentation that can be done to the college 101 students but not limited just to that group. The presentation is about the effects of social network web sites like MySpace and Facebook on their chances of being hired and how employers uses those sites to help base their choice of who to hire.

Christina will be working on getting permission for material and creating the presentation. Joyce will be creating flyers and posters to be posted on campus to promote STC and technical communications. Matthew will work on creating a multimedia presentation of what technical communication is and what it does.

Christina will also try to get in contact with the Girl Scouts to start the process of setting up the workshop for them.

Another future goal is to gain support from the community and educate them on STC and technical communications and what our field can do for them.
