Tradition and Discovery: The Polanyi Society Periodical (TAD) is the successor to earlier newsletter format and mini-journal publications by the Polanyi Society beginning in the seventies; these predecessors were issued under other names and were published somewhat irregularly. Below is a listing of Polanyi Society publications. The highlighted issue numbers link to that issue's table of contents. If the full issue is available in pdf format, the link is to the table of contents in the TAD digital archives.The index of TAD authors does identify some (but not all) materials published in the earlier newsletters and journal issues which did not have electronic text. Following the publication history below are suggestions about how to trace early publications.
The first newsletter, called "Society of Explorers," was issued in the Fall of 1972 (Vol. 1, No. 1); two succeeding newsletters with that name followed in the Winter of 1972-73 (Vol. I, No. 2) and the Spring of 1973 (Vol. I, No. 3).
In the Fall of 1973, the newsletter's name was changed to simply "The Polanyi Society." Newsletter issue dates for the publication with this name are the following:

By 1983, the newsletter format had become unwieldy ( Vol. X, No. 2 Winter 1982-83 was 14 pages long) and "The Polanyi Society" shifted to a mini-journal format in the Fall of 1983. There were only two mini-journal numbers with the name "The Polanyi Society": Vol. XI, No. 1 in Fall of 1983 and Vol. XI, No. 2 in Winter of 1983-84. With Vol. XII, No. 1 in the Fall of 1984-85, the mini-journal name changed to the present name "Tradition and Discovery: The Polanyi Society Periodical."
Following is a list of issues for the journal with the present name and format; as noted above, there have been some lapses in publication and some changes in the way issues were dated. This list simply uses the cover designation. The table of contents/cover can be accessed for all highlighted volumes. Vol. XVII, No.1 & 2, Spring, 1990-91
The material included in the early newsletters and mini-journal was quite diverse. Frequently there were announcements about upcoming meetings, reports on meetings and conferences, Polanyi Society membership lists, bibliographic data, book reviews and short essays. Often there was reprinted material from Convivium: The United Kingdom Review of Post-critical Thought (the publication of the United Kingdom counterpart to the Polanyi Society whose name was also Convivium). In 1994-95, the Convivium membership was merged with the Polanyi Society. From the period of the shift to mini-journal format (Vol. XI, No. 1, Fall, 1983), articles and reviews became the major content of Tradition and Discovery.
