STATEMENT OF PURPOSEThe overall goal of this project is to assess the effectiveness of teaching strategies on student skills in a variety of areas, including data analysis, reading primary literature, and critical thinking. We have developed teaching strategies and specific assignments that involve the use of primary literature and analysis of data from published articles to improve student content learning, analysis, and critical thinking skills. We wish to assess the effectiveness of these assignments and teaching strategies in developing student skills in order to determine whether improvements can be made to teaching and assessment strategies, and to determine whether the teaching methods and assignments used are effective means of achieving our goals for student learning.
STATEMENT OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGYThis project will involve students registered for several courses taught by the principle investigator and the additional investigators, including BIO 496 Molecular Basis of Disease, BIO 421 Immunology, and BIO 390 Microbiology. Estimated enrollment in these courses is a total of 50-60 students in the 2008-2009 academic year. Surveys and pre- and post-tests may also be administered to students in lower-division classes taught by the investigators, such as BIO 250 Anatomy & Physiology, BIO 251 Medical & Public Health Microbiology, or BIO 101 Principles of Biology as controls for the project. This project is being conducted in collaboration with Dr. Brian J. Rybarczyk at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and students from his classes will also be involved in this project. Dr. Rybarczyk is currently submitting a renewal for a previously approved by the Institutional Research Board at UNC-CH for these studies. Documentation of Dr. Rybarczyk’s IRB protocol renewal can be provided upon request once the renewal has been approved at his institution. The evaluation of the effectiveness of the teaching strategies and assignments will be assessed by multiple methods as follows: • Administration of surveys for students to evaluate their perceptions of their content knowledge and skills in the targeted area, and the usefulness and effectiveness of the teaching strategies and assignments used in these courses • Administration of pre- and post-tests to measure gains in student learning and skills in the relevant areas • Collection of relevant demographic data, specifically including the number of prior biology classes taken, experiences in independent research, and experiences reading primary literature and presenting data Survey and pre- and post-test data will be compiled and reported as aggregate class data, and students will not be individually identified. To allow matching of pre- and post-test data from the same individuals, students will be asked to enter the last four digits of their G number on the pre- and post-test forms. Additional assessment related to this project will include quizzes or questions on exams related to the content and skills covered in assignments and in the courses in general. Information from quizzes or exams will be solely used to assess how well students learned the material, and data collected will only be reported as aggregate class data. All information regarding the identity of individual students and student grade-related information will be kept confidential. Records of student grades as well as graded quizzes and exams will be treated as with any student grade-related material and will be kept locked in the instructors’ offices.
ANTICIPATED RISKS AND BENEFITSThis study does not pose any risk to students other than the minimal risk.
SUBJECT SELECTIONAll students enrolled in BIO 496, BIO 421, and BIO 390 each semester will be involved (approximately 50-60 in the 2008-2009 academic year). An additional 50-100 students from BIO 251, BIO 250, and/or BIO 101 may be involved as controls.
CONFIDENTIALITYStudent grades and identifying information will be kept confidential as with any grade-related information. Completed student surveys, pre- and post-tests, quizzes, and exams will be kept locked in the instructors’ offices. Any published data resulting from this study will not identify individual students but instead will report class statistics.
Amendment on 08-26-2009EVALUATING TEACHING STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE DATA ANALYSIS, PRIMARY LITERATURE READING, AND CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS I would like to add BIO 375 Pathophysiology to the classes included in this proposal. I have started teaching this class since submitting the original proposal and plan to include this population of students in the analysis of teaching strategies targeted at student data analysis and critical thinking skills. This will add approximately 170 students (85 per semester) to the participants in the 2009-2010 academic year.

I am continuing to collect data for this project with the aim of generating one or more manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals. Further data collection will strengthen my analysis and improve potential manuscripts. No changes are being made to the methods described in this proposal.

I have started teaching this class since submitting the original proposal and plan to include this population of students in the analysis of teaching strategies targeted at student data analysis and critical thinking skills. This will add approximately 40 students per academic year to the potential participants in the study.
