STATEMENT OF PURPOSEThe purpose of this research is to examine the relationships between components and procedures inside forensic laboratories and develop a greater understanding of forensic laboratories in general. Through our exploratory research, we hope to gain an understanding of the use of forensic laboratories by law enforcement and the courts systems.
STATEMENT OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGYDuring the data collection phase of our research, we would like to conduct in-person/telephone interviews with professionals working in the laboratory environment, law enforcement, and the legal system to examine their knowledge of forensic investigation processes. We plan to interview laboratory administrators, law enforcement management and working agents, and attorneys to further explore this topic and how their occupational roles play a part in the entire process of evidence collection to trial.
ANTICIPATED RISKS AND BENEFITSThe benefit of this research will be examination of working relationships between the laboratories themselves, law enforcement professionals, and attorneys to gain a clearer perspective about the chronic issues that are plaguing forensic laboratories.
SUBJECT SELECTIONTen to twelve professionals within the forensic laboratory, law enforcement, and legal systems will be contacted by telephone or e-mail to ask for their voluntary participation in our study.
CONFIDENTIALITYThe identities and places of employment for the interview subjects will be kept completely confidential.
