ABSTRACT

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE The purpose of this research would be to determine if the 6 week course in Anger Management would be more effective than the current 8 hour class. The idea behind gathering this data would be to help repeat offenders think differently. It is important because anger management would teach offenders healthy relationship and good boundaries. The study will be a voluntary survey as well as an interview. The findings of this study will be given to the Department of Corrections to aid in any needed changes to the program. STATEMENT OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGY This study will be conducted at the Addiction Awareness Center and at Probation and Parole Office. Participants will be men and women over the age of 18 and be picked using a convenience sample. Participants will be told about the study in a cover letter and will be informed they need not answer any question they don’t feel comfortable answering. The survey and interviews will be used to see if participants think they benefit from this class, or could they benefit from a series of classes over a 6 week period. ANTICIPATED RISKS AND BENEFITS The participants should experience minimal risk in joining this study. There will be no physical risk presented to the client. Participants are free to skip any question that they do not feel comfortable answering, so this is minimal emotional risks. All questionnaires are kept anonymous posing minimal risk of exposure. No identifying markers will be used. This survey could benefit Department of Corrections by providing a better understanding of client’s needs when it comes to learning Anger Management skills. SUBJECT SELECTION The survey will be given at two locations. The first location is Addiction Awareness which is outpatient treatment center. All participation's that are court-ordered into Domestic Violence Impact (DVI) programs as well as clients at the Addiction Awareness center will be offered the chance to take the survey. The second location is at Probation and Parole Office. The DVI program is offered to participants who are unable to leave Probation and Parole. I anticipate 25 -50 participants. They will not be compensated for this survey. CONFIDENTIALITY No identifying markers will be on the questionnaires to obtain anonymity. The surveys will be kept in a locked file drawer. They will also be destroyed upon completion of this project. The questionnaires will only be assigned a number for data purpose.
