STATEMENT OF PURPOSE Living in a global society, everyone needs to understand the importance of other cultures. Many believe as long as they have a strong grasp of who they are and where they came from that is all that matters. However, to be a well-rounded, functioning and successfully contributing member of society, one must understand cultures, views, and ideas that differ from their own. Other cultures can provide new and insightful ideas about how to become a more self-fulfilled individual. One way society has tried to link differing cultural views is through instruction. Educational institutions at all levels have started incorporating multicultural content and instruction. This can and has been done in several ways, from materials to class design. There are differing views on whether the linking of multicultural content with in instruction is relevant. The purpose of this study is to determine if multicultural content in instruction is important in all levels of education. There is proof that multicultural content in instruction is important for individuals of all ages to become well-rounded, functioning and successfully contributing members of society. Research will be conducted during the 2012-2013 school year at Carver Dual Language Elementary in Kansas City, MO. STATEMENT OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGY My research is physically risk-free. I will conduct surveys, interviews, and observations at Carver Dual Language Elementary school in Kansas City, MO. I want to justify the importance of using multicultural content in instruction. I will observe how students interact and react to content that is multi-cutural and non-multicultural. I will survey and interview students, faculty, and parents of the sixth grade classes. There is a need understand their views of multicultural content in instruction and whether they feel it is beneficial for individuals to become well rounded, functioning and successful contributing members of society. ANTICIPATED RISKS AND BENEFITS There are no physical risks connected to my study. It is about thought processes and the important of content curriculum. It could have a mental effect such as guilt. I will conduct follow up questions to see if there are lingering effects is this area. If so, I will arrange for a counselor to talk with them, and will report these issues if the arise. The benefits are important because they will address a need for increased knowledge of multicutural content in all areas of education. SUBJECT SELECTION I anticipate a subject number of 75-100 (students, faculty, parents). There are a diverse group of individuals being studied and interviews. They range in race and in age. Students, faculty, and parents range in age of 11-60. They range in race (hispanic, white, etc.) It goes on the background of the faculty of the school being studeid, and on the background of the 6th grade class. CONFIDENTIALITY I will collect data and store it in files and on the computer. The information will be kept safeguarded. I will receive written consent of all participants. I will make copies to keep on paper file and upload to the computer. The paper copies will be kept in a locked file cabinet. The only computer will be my personal one.
