Application Process for Nursing Scholars Early Accept Program

Early acceptance into the BSN Pre-licensure program is available for high school seniors and Missouri Western Freshmen with superior academic achievement. Students who are granted early acceptance are then designated as "Nursing Scholars". These students are eligible to participate in special programs and activities within the Department of Nursing. They are also eligible for some departmental scholarships.

Criteria for Acceptance:

  • High school seniors: must meet all four of the following criteria: have an ACT composite score of at least 24; rank in top 20% of their high school graduating class; have a high school cumulative GPA of 3.2 or above on a 4.0 scale and be admitted to MWSU. Students may turn application in during the second semester of their senior year but final deadline for the application packet is August 1st following high school graduation. Click here to for further instructions and to print a copy of the application. In the absence of class rank, a student may request an appeal for early acceptance based on superior academic performance. Documentation to support superior academic performance may include, but is not limited to: demonstrated success in dual credit courses, standardized test scores in the upper 15th percentile nationally and scholarships, awards and other academic recognitions. Appeal will be reviewed by the APG Committee on a case by case basis.
  • MWSU freshmen: must meet the following criteria: be currently enrolled as a MWSU student; have completed at least 14 credit hours (excluding dual credit, transfer credit, or developmental coursework) which includes one lab science with a grade of B or better and have a cumulative GPA >3.2. Final deadlines for freshmen candidates are January 15th or August 15th following completion of their first semester. Click here for further instructions and to print a copy of the application. *MWSU freshman is defined as someone who is enrolled full-time in their first year of college coursework following high school graduation or receipt of GED.

All applications and $30 application fee need to be turned into the Department of Nursing by deadlines in order to be considered. Applicants will then be notified in writing of their acceptance as a Nursing Scholar.

NOTE: All Nursing Scholars must maintain continuous enrollment at MWSU and a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or greater in order to maintain this status. If the Cumulative GPA drops below 3.2 after any semester of pre-nursing coursework, the student will receive a letter indicating that they are no longer eligible. The student will then need to submit a new nursing department application for regular acceptance into the program after they have completed (or are currently enrolled in) all general studies and nursing support courses.
