Western's Provost Announces Retirement

WESTERN'S PROVOST ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
St. Joseph, Mo. -June 30, 2009 -Dr. Joseph Bragin, Missouri Western State University’s provost and vice president for academic and student affairs, has announced his retirement.
Dr. Bragin has been at Western since 2006. Western has experienced record enrollment each of the three years he has served as the university’s chief academic officer. He has overseen the creation of Western’s first graduate programs, and helped hood the first master degree recipients during the spring commencement ceremony last month.
“I appreciate Dr. Bragin’s service,” said Dr. Robert Vartabedian, Western’s president. “Under his leadership, Western has maintained excellent academic standards in our undergraduate education while adding graduate programs that serve the needs of the region’s employers.”
Prior to coming to Western, Dr. Bragin was dean of the College of Science at Marshall University in West Virginia. He also held administrative positions at the National Science Foundation and California State University, Los Angeles, and teaching and research positions at NASA’s Ames Research Center and the University of South Carolina.
Dr. Bragin received his bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College, and his doctorate degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Dr. Jeanne Daffron, associate provost for academic and student affairs and interim dean of graduate studies, will serve as interim provost and vice president, effective July 1.
