EGGS AND ISSUES PRESENTS SEN. CHARLIE SHIELDS

St. Joseph, Mo. - Oct. 28, 2010 - State Sen. Charlie Shields will speak at Eggs and Issues at Missouri Western State University Wednesday, November 10 at 7 a.m. in the Fulkerson Center. The breakfast and program will be free. To make reservations call 816-271-5646 by Monday, November 8.

Shields' presentation is titled ''The Missouri Legislature in Retrospect.'' As Shields prepares to end his second term as a Missouri state senator, he will share his experiences as a state representative for 12 years and a state senator for eight years, talking about the Missouri legislative system (its strengths and shortcomings), legislative accomplishments during his tenure and what he sees as important issues in the future. Since he has served as both Senate President Pro Tem and Senate Majority Floor Leader, Shields has a unique and enlightening perspective on our State Legislature.

Shields was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 1990, and the victory represented the first time a Republican has been elected to the Missouri House from Buchanan County since 1946. He served for 12 years in the House, and was elected House Minority Whip by his colleagues. House Republicans named him ''Outstanding Freshman Legislator'' in 1992. In 2002, he was named Legislator of the Year during the Republican State Lincoln Days in Springfield.

Shields was elected to the Missouri State Senate in 2002, representing the 34th District. He served as Senate Majority Floor Leader, and in 2009, was unanimously elected by his colleagues to serve in the Senates top leadership position, Senate President Pro Tem.

Shields is the Chief Operating Officer for Truman Medical Center Lakewood in Kansas City. Prior to that, he was health marketing and communications officer at Heartland Health in St. Joseph for 17 years.

The Eggs and Issues series is a community education forum that has been sponsored by the MWSU Foundation since it started in 1988.
