ST. JOSEPH COMMUNITY CHORUS PRESENTS CONCERT TO HONOR VETERANS
St. Joseph, Mo. - Oct. 29, 2010 - The St. Joseph Community Chorus will present a special concert to honor Americas veterans at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7 at the Missouri Theatre. Veterans are admitted free. Adult tickets are $12, seniors $10, students $5 and children 10 and under are free. Tickets are available at the door and from chorus members.
This is the 30th anniversary season of the St. Joseph Community Chorus. Its first concert is titled, ''Celebrating America: A Tribute to America's Veterans.'' The veterans concert welcomes the 55-member Northwinds Symphonic Band as the St. Joseph Community Chorus' special guest. Northwinds is a regional band based in Kansas City that is made up of active and retired band directors.
The Veteran's Concert will celebrate the theme of freedom. As part of the concert the band will play ''Salute to America's Finest: The official songs of the U.S. Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines and Air Force'' during the presentation of the colors.
Dr. David Benz, director of choral activities at Missouri Western State University and director of the Community Chorus, selected and will conduct Randall Thompson's ''Testament of Freedom'' and Aaron Copland's ''Canticle of Freedom,'' two important works by two of America's premiere composers. Thompson's ''Testament of Freedom'' presents four writings of Thomas Jefferson. In addition, Brig. Gen. Stephen Cotter, Assistant Adjutant Gerneral-Air of the Missouri National Guard and a 1978 graduate of Western, will present ''A Soldier's Reading.''
''The founding words of Thomas Jefferson and the music of Randall Thompson stir deep patriotic feelings,'' Dr. Benz said. ''It is an honor for the chorus and the community to thank those who have sacrificed to serve our country.'' Dr. Benzs son is a U.S. Marine serving in Afghanistan. He adds, ''I know there are many families like mine that long for their sons and daughters to come home safely and soon. This is our prayer. And now, here at the time of Veterans Day, we pause to honor and commemorate the service of all of our soldiers, past and present, those who have come home and those who did not. We remember their sacrifice to give all for our freedom.''
