WESTERN SELECTS CONTRACTOR FOR RESIDENCE HALL
St. Joseph, Mo. - July 27, 2010 - The Board of Governors at Missouri Western State University has selected Brooner & Associates Construction Inc. to build a new residence hall on campus. In a phone poll, the board accepted Brooners base bid plus three alternates, totaling $12,118,341. They also approved the administration's recommendation of a 7 percent contingency for any unseen costs. Brooner's bid was the lowest of five submitted by pre-qualified contractors by the July 22 deadline.
The new residence hall will be located south of Scanlon Hall. It will have approximately 250 beds in apartment-style units. Each apartment will have kitchen facilities and four private bedrooms. The hall will also feature a workout room and community lounge. Ellison-Auxier Architects Inc. consulted with students and staff to create a living space that would be attractive to students, especially to upperclassmen.
''We know that there's a strong correlation between living on campus and succeeding in school, but we also know that upperclassmen sometimes prefer the independence that comes with an off-campus apartment,'' said Dr. Esther Perlez, vice president for student affairs. ''The new hall has been designed to give those older students a more attractive on-campus alternative.''
Construction will begin as soon as the contract is finalized. It is scheduled to be completed in time to be occupied in fall 2011. Funding for the project comes from auxiliary system revenue bonds.
Today's telephone poll vote will be ratified at the next regularly scheduled Board of Governors meeting on August 26.
