Create/Edit Anchors & Anchor Links

Anchors are bits of code added to a webpage that allow users to jump to certain sections of the page without leaving the page.

Anchors and anchor links are very useful tools on pages with very large quantities of information and should only be used in situations where users are looking for a specific piece of data on a page loaded with information. If the site is providing a step-by-step guide, for example, anchors should be avoided because users need to read all of the information on the page, not just a certain part. But a page of Frequently Asked Questions is ideal for using anchors and anchor links.

To create an anchor:

  • Point the cursor where the anchor will be set. This is where the user is sent when the anchor link is clicked.
  • From the "Insert" menu above the Contribute toolbar, select "Section Anchor"
  • Type in a name for the anchor in the textbox. Use a single descriptive word with no capitals or punctuation.
  • Click "OK" and a small black flag appears to represent the anchor. This flag only appears while in Page Edit Mode.
  • Repeat this process for each anchor.

To create an anchor link:

  • Find or type text to use as the anchor link.
  • Highlight the text.
  • Click the "Link" button on the Contribute Toolbar and select "Drafts and Recent Pages"
  • On the left side of the dialog box is a list of all pages. Click on the title of the current page.
  • Click the button labeled "Advanced" located just below the file list.
  • Select the desired anchor from the "Section Anchor" drop-down list that now appears just above the "Advanced" button.
  • Click "OK"
  • Repeat this process for each anchor to create a corresponding link.
  • Click "Publish" when finished editing.

To delete an anchor:

  • Right-click on the anchor to delete.
  • Select "Cut"
  • Right-click the link corresponding to the anchor deleted.
  • Select "Remove Link"
  • Delete the text so it no longer appears.
  • Click "Publish" when finished editing.

To edit an anchor:

  • Right-click on the anchor to edit.
  • Select "Anchor Properties"
  • Type the new name of the anchor.
  • Right-click the link corresponding to the anchor changed.
  • Select "Link Properties"
  • Click the title of the current page.
  • Select the new anchor name from the "Section Anchor" drop-down list just above the "Advanced" button.
  • Click "OK"
  • Click "Publish" when finished editing.
