Student Guide to Online Classes

Tips for being an online student

First time? Online classes are very different from traditional face-to-face classes. Sure, they fit wonderfully into your schedule and some say actually result in deeper learning. In the online classroom, all communication is visual—you have to read and understand everything. This may or may not be hard for you. Consider these tips to make the course as successful as possible:

  • Online courses are not self-paced. You must follow the content at the rate set by the professor.
  • Online classes are not easier than face-to-face classes and may be harder for you.
  • Logon and read the course documents immediately.
  • Read and respond to all communications from your professor in a timely manner.
  • Be an active learner! Online classes are about posting and sharing ideas.
  • Logon to the course daily—there are lots of communications happening every day in an online class.
  • Time management is important. Set reminders in your computer or datebook to make sure you get all assignments done on time.
  • Since learning is at home, make sure you have quiet time away from the children, family, or pets to study.
  • Don't be a flamer or a lurker! Review netiquette tips and make sure you follow them. It's easy to offend in an e-mail. There are several good sources for netiquette tips, click here for one site.
  • Contact the Center of Academic Support if you need a tutor. They can help anyone be a more effective learner.
  • Make sure you have the proper computer skills and software required to complete the class. Check with your professor.
