There is a high demand for graduates with this degree.
According to the president and CEO of the American Medical
Informatics Association, “Virtually every hospital, clinic,
physician office, or other healthcare provider organization will
in some way utilize information technology solutions in the
coming years and will need healthcare professionals versed in
informatics to assist with the implementation, use and success
of these systems.”
The 2006-7 Occupational Outlook Handbook from the
Bureau of Labor Statistics provides the following data:
• 18 of the top 20 fastest growing occupations will be in
health care and computer-science-related
professions
• Employment of medical records and health information
technicians is expected to grow 27%-plus
through 2014.
• Employment of computer support specialists is expected to
increase 18-20% for all occupations through
2014.
Graduates will serve as a pivotal team member in the
planning, design, implementation, management, use and
evaluation of electronic health records and other electronic
information systems.
Career options include compliance officers, data quality
managers, data sets/nomenclature/classification standards
managers, educators, healthcare consumer advocates,
privacy/security officers, project managers, reimbursement or
revenue cycle managers, to name a few.
