The department offers a variety of majors and minors in Political Science, Social Work and Sociology:

What are the admission requirements for the program?

Applicants for the Political Science and Public Affairs major must have a GPA of 2.0 and  complete Government 101 and English 104 with a grade of C or higher. The program is academically challenging and requires students to take the prerequisite courses to polish reading, writing and analytical thinking skills.

Minimum requirements for admission into the Social Work major include completion of the general studies math requirement, College Writing and Research, and Principles of Biology or equivalent. Students must also complete Introduction to Social Work, Introduction to Sociology, General Psychology and Social Problems with a minimum grade of a C.In addition, Social Work applicants must meet certain professional and academic standards. They must have a minimum GPA of 2.5, and must agree to conduct themselves in a professional manner consistent with accepted professional social work practices and the current National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics.

What is the typical class size?

Most majors courses in Political Science and Sociology range from 15 to 25 students. Most Social Work majors classes range from 15 to 25 students.

What student organizations are available?

Students may join from the Political Science Club and Phi Alpha Honor Society to share their interests in government and public affairs. These organizations sponsor political forums and provide volunteer service to the community, among other activities.

The Social Work Program sponsors two student organizations:  the Organization of Student Social Workers and Delta Epsilon chapter of the Phi Alpha Honor Society.

Are any of the programs accredited?

Western’s Social Work program is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, the social work profession’s national accrediting body. 

How do students work together with faculty?

Professors work one-on-one with students on research projects, and faculty members offer individualized attention on assignments if students request assistance.

Faculty members have an “open-door” policy for their students, as they are willing to offer individualized instruction if it is needed. The Social Work program is very demanding, and the professors want to ensure that their majors earn their degrees and succeed in their Social Work careers.
