Technology Jobs Note: These jobs do not require you to have an engineer license, however, if you want to become a licensed engineer (P.E.), we would suggest you register with the State of South Dakota. How do I become a licensed engineer (P.E.)?According to a 2008 survey by Scott Wolcott at RIT, there are 34 States that allow students graduated from ABET-TAC accredited programs to obtain a PE license in their states. These are: Alaska, Maine, Oregon, Arizona, Montana, Pennsylvania, California, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Colorado, Nevada, South Carolina, Connecticut, New Jersey, South Dakota, Delaware, New Mexico, Texas, Georgia, New York, Utah, Hawaii, North Carolina, Vermont, Idaho, North Dakota, Virginia, Massachusetts, Ohio, Washington, Maryland, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, West Virginia. We suggest our students who want to become P.E. to registrar with the State of South Dakota. You will need to take and pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam with the South Dakota Board of Technical Professions. There will be a fee to be registered as a P.E. You are not required to take the exam to graduate. You will be solely responsible for these activities as well as fees. For more information, please visit, http://www.state.sd.us/dol/boards/engineer/. "Reciprocity Among States" All states use the NCEES examinations. If you take and pass the FE or PE examination in one state, your certificate will be honored by all of the other states. Although there may be other special requirements imposed by a state, it will not be necessary to retake the FE and PE examinations. The issuance of an engineering license based on another state’s license is known as reciprocity or comity.” --M.R. Lindeberg, Core Engineering Concepts, Professional
