The Foreign Language Placement Examination helps us to determine your placement in our foreign language program at Missouri Western State University.

If you have studied French, German, or Spanish in high school or college, and wish to receive credit, or if you are unsure which level of French, German, or Spanish is the best one for you to continue your language studies, take the free, standardized placement test offered in your language. Depending on your results, you may be eligible for 3 to 12 hours of credit.

If you plan to enroll in a foreign language course, you should be aware that one-two years of a language in high school is usually equivalent to one semester in college. If you have already enrolled in a course according to your background, you may still wish to take the placement test to confirm that it is the best class for you.

Effective Fall 2004, students whose high school transcripts show three or more years of French, German, or Spanish (with grades of C or better, and within three years of the semester in question) should attempt the placement exam because they will not receive credit should they enroll in the beginning French, Spanish, or German course (FRE/GER/SPA 102).

The placement test is offered free of charge. You will receive your results by email. Should you decide to claim your credit, you must file a test out petition and pay the test fee of $85.00. Stop by Eder Hall 212 for instructions on how to claim credit.

However, if you enroll in the course suggested by the placement test and complete that course with a grade of C or better, your test fee will be refunded in full! That means that you may receive up to twelve hours of free credit!

What do you save by taking the placement test? Time and money. Rather than spend an entire semester and tuition dollars on material that you already know, you'll be able to build on your language studies and make the most of them.

Students who receive credit for FRE, GER or SPA 100 or higher can satisfy the General Studies Category 4 Humanities requirement for foreign language.

There is nothing to lose and everything to gain!
