Mark F. McDonald

“From my very first year, I found a genuine sense of belonging – belonging to a college that expressed a sincere interest in the education and development of young people. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the faculty of the Chemistry Department – a team of professors dedicated to the growth and success of its graduates.”

Deborah Wright

"As a non-traditional student, I was looking for a way to get beyond an entry level position. The MAS Chemistry degree was the perfect answer for me. I was able to bypass the entry level requirements and transition directly to a position as a lab manager."

Deborah Wright, BS '07, MAS '09
Laboratory Manager, IIALS

Kim Willis

"When I graduated from Missouri Western, I realized I was much better prepared to enter the workplace than students from any other college or university around. I found that I had better skills in the lab and more hands-on experience than they had. My 'golden' experience was winning a national chemistry award for my research and being awarded a grant to present it at a national meeting."

Kim Willis, '02
Scientist

Dr. Darrin L. Smith

“As a graduate student, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the educational resources and the quality of instruction available to me as an undergraduate student were equivalent to larger and more expensive universities. In some respects, the smaller class size and ability to work more closely with faculty gave me an advantage.

The faculty at Missouri Western truly care about the students and want them to succeed. Now that I am a university instructor, I am trying to give my students the same attention and commitment that I was given while an undergraduate student at Missouri Western.”

Dr. Darrin L. Smith, ’97
Associate Professor

Fall 2012 Message from the Chair

As we begin the new academic year I would like to extend a heartfelt “welcome” to our new students, a “welcome back” to our returning students, and a “we miss you and would love to hear from you” to our alumni and friends.  As usual the Department has been a busy place over the past year, and will be a busy place over the upcoming one as well.  During this past year we graduated 13 bachelor’s degree students and 4 master’s degree students.  One of these students was our first graduate through our recent medical technology partnership with the University of Nebraska Medical Center.  Three of our graduates went on to attend graduate programs at Baylor College of Medicine, the University of Nebraska, and Iowa State University.  We were very proud when our MAS Chemistry degree was recognized by the Council on Graduate Schools as a Professional Science Masters.  Two of our students were admitted to REU programs at Kansas State University and Virginia Commonwealth, and 15 students participated in undergraduate research here at MWSU.  We had a very successful Chemathon competition and did activities and demonstrations for over 1000 people attending Super Science Saturday.  Our dual credit program, headed by Dr. Janelle Torres y Torres, continues to grow with 21 schools and nearly 200 students participating this year.  On the faculty front, Dr. Jon Rhoad was promoted to Associate Professor and received tenure.   Dr. Ben Caldwell was promoted to the MWSU Dean of Graduate Studies, and I was tasked to fill his shoes as the Department Chair.

We have a lot planned for this upcoming year that we will continue to share via the Website and through our new Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/MWSUChemistry).  Some of the items planned include Chemathon, Super Science Saturday, a wide variety of seminars, our fall picnic, winter party, and end of school awards picnic, and many more. In addition, we will see the graduation of 22 students between Winter and Spring commencements!  I’ll do my best to keep you updated on our many activities and accomplishments as the year progresses.

Mike Ducey
Associate Professor and Chair
