Open Faculty Position Assistant Professor, Biochemistry

Missouri Western State University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor faculty position in the area of Biochemistry to begin August 2013.  Because participation in the development and/or administration of a new Master of Applied Science program in Industrial Life Science will be expected, experience in the life science industry (especially GMP and QA/QC) will be highly valued.  Teaching responsibilities may include biochemistry, courses associated with the new graduate program, general studies chemistry, or courses in the candidate’s area of expertise.  The successful candidate must demonstrate strong commitments to teaching, mentoring undergraduate student research and sustained scholarly activity and will be expected to participate in Department, University, and community support activities.

 

REQUIREMENTS

Qualified candidates for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor will possess a doctorate degree in biochemistry or chemistry, with expertise in the sub discipline of biochemistry or a closely related field.  Because participation in the development and/or administration of a new Master of Applied Science degree in Industrial Life Science will be expected, experience in the life science industry (especially GMP and QA/QC) will be valued.

THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY

The Chemistry Department is staffed by 8 full-time faculty, covering all major areas of chemistry, who are dedicated to quality undergraduate and graduate education and applied learning with an emphasis on experimental and instrumental exposure.  The department is accredited by the American Chemical Society and offers ACS certified BS degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (administered in collaboration with the Department of Biology).  BS degrees are also offered in Medical Technology and Natural Science/ Chemistry with concentrations in four areas including Health Professions, Secondary Education, Forensic Sciences, and Chemical Business.  The Department awards a Masters of Applied Sciences degree in Chemistry which focuses on bridging chemistry with business.  This degree is recognized by the Council on Graduate Schools as a Professional Science Master’s program.  The department is well equipped with modern instrumentation including a 300 MHz NMR, FTIR (with microscope), UV/VIS (with temperature controlled multicell kinetics package), HPLC, GC/MS, fluorimeter (with temperature control and microtiter plate reader), CD spectrophotometer, digital polarimeter, electrochemical workstation, inert atmosphere chamber, and computational workstations/ servers with Guassian, GaussView and Amber software.  A renovation and expansion project was recently completed expanding our math and science facilities to over 120,000 sq ft of state of the art laboratories and classrooms as well as dedicated research space.  For more information visit the department web site:  http://www.missouriwestern.edu/chemistry.

 

THE UNIVERISTY

The historic city of St. Joseph, Missouri has a population of approximately 74,000 and is located 50 miles north of Kansas City and only 35 miles from Kansas City International Airport.  Recreational, cultural and community opportunities are available.  The cost-of-living is below the national average, especially for housing costs.
